Amazon phases out Fire Tablets, replacing them with Android-based Alexa Tablets

Amazon will phase out Fire Tablets in favor of Alexa Tablets running standard Android with Play Store access, citing customer demand for Google services and better hardware.

Amazon phases out Fire Tablets, replacing them with Android-based Alexa Tablets

Amazon is phasing out its Fire Tablet line and replacing it with Alexa Tablets, according to comments from Panos Panay, Amazon's head of consumer electronics, in an interview with Bloomberg reported by The Verge. The change retires a brand best known for low prices and a tightly controlled software experience, and it amounts to an admission that the formula stopped meeting customer expectations.

The reasoning behind the exit

Panay told Bloomberg the Fire tablet line "wasn't giving customers what they were asking for." According to The Verge, those requests centered on access to Google services, higher-quality hardware, and less in-your-face advertising on the lock screen.

The software gap was the most concrete problem. The new Alexa Tablets run what The Verge describes as "proper Android" instead of Amazon's custom Fire OS, with full access to the Google Play Store — something Fire tablets never had. On Fire hardware, Gmail, Google Calendar, YouTube, Google Drive and other Google services were reachable only through the browser, because the official Google apps were not available in the Amazon Appstore.

That constraint made Fire tablets an awkward fit for anyone who relied on Google's apps day to day, and low prices evidently offset the friction for only so long.

What happens to current Fire tablet owners

Amazon will keep delivering security updates for existing Fire tablets. "We won't leave any customer behind," Panay said in the Bloomberg interview. What owners should not expect is new hardware: per The Verge, there will be no further hardware refreshes for the line, so the current models are effectively the last of the brand.

More announcements, but no laptops

Panay also indicated that Amazon has more hardware announcements planned throughout the fall. One category he ruled out, according to The Verge, is an Amazon-branded computer or laptop.

Why it matters

The Fire tablet proposition was always a trade-off: accept lock screen ads, an app store without Google's apps, and a heavily customized operating system in exchange for a very low price. Panay's remarks, relayed through Bloomberg and The Verge, read as an acknowledgment that customers were no longer willing to make that trade at scale.

It is also a notable consumer hardware deprecation. Individual tablet models get discontinued all the time; whole brands are retired far less often, and here the entire Fire Tablet line is winding down with only security updates promised for the future. For shoppers, the Alexa Tablet family becomes the successor path, one that finally carries the Play Store and the official Google apps that Fire OS kept out. For Amazon, the move trades ecosystem lock-in for devices that compete on the same software footing as every other Android tablet on the market — a meaningful shift in strategy for its consumer hardware business.
