Amazon pilots ChatGPT ad placements through Amazon DSP in US OpenAI partnership
Amazon advertisers can now buy ChatGPT ad inventory through Amazon DSP in a US pilot with OpenAI, a sign that AI chat interfaces are becoming standard programmatic ad inventory.

Amazon is testing ad placements inside ChatGPT through a new partnership with OpenAI, giving brands a direct route into one of the most widely used AI assistants. According to Marketing Dive, which reported the arrangement, the pilot is limited to the U.S. at launch and includes a small set of brands, among them Delta Vacations, the airline's vacation-package arm.
The move is one of the clearest signs yet that conversational AI interfaces are becoming ordinary advertising inventory, bought and measured much like search or display.
How the integration works
ChatGPT Ads inventory is sold through Amazon DSP, the company's demand-side platform, and offered as a managed service, meaning Amazon's team helps advertisers set up and optimize campaigns. Pricing follows familiar digital-ad models, with inventory available on both a cost-per-click and a cost-per-thousand-impressions basis.
Control over where and when ads actually appear stays with OpenAI, which makes all delivery decisions through its own systems, an Amazon spokesperson told Marketing Dive. The units render as text and image placements below ChatGPT's organic answers, carrying clearly marked sponsored labels, consistent with how OpenAI has served ads so far. ChatGPT currently shows ads to users on its free tier and its lower-priced Go subscription.
Amazon is also offering product feed ads that automatically generate ad creative from a brand's product catalogue. Advertisers in the pilot receive aggregated performance data covering impressions, clicks, cost per result, CPM and CPC. Marketing Dive notes the format could appeal to non-endemic advertisers — brands that do not normally sell goods on Amazon.
A large buyer meets a fast-growing channel
For OpenAI, the tie-up plugs a very large buyer into a business it has built at speed. The company began testing ads inside ChatGPT in February, and according to Marketing Dive the segment recently crossed a $1 billion annualized revenue run rate, with tens of thousands of advertisers using it and availability expanded to India, Europe, the Middle East and North Africa. OpenAI has also enlisted LiveRamp to strengthen measurement.
For Amazon, the appeal runs the other way. The company operates the third-largest digital advertising platform and took in close to $70 billion in ad revenue last year, the report states. Extending that business into ChatGPT helps defend its position as consumer product research shifts toward AI assistants.
OpenAI has worked with smaller retail media networks before, including those run by Target and Albertsons, but the Amazon arrangement is considerably larger. Marketing Dive also notes that OpenAI reportedly discussed a deal with The Trade Desk, an independent DSP and Amazon rival, earlier this year — a sign that the choice of Amazon as the first major DSP partner was not inevitable.
Not everything is settled. The report points to industry accounts of some marketers being unimpressed with ChatGPT ad performance so far, and OpenAI's decision to run ads at all has drawn criticism from competitors. The company is scaling the business ahead of a widely anticipated IPO, where advertising will likely feature in its revenue story.
Katrin Koenig, president of Delta Vacations, framed the pilot around personalization, saying in a statement that travel planning is increasingly individualized and that the collaboration lets the brand use consumer insights to decide how and when it appears within ChatGPT.
Why it matters
Advertising inside AI chat has moved from experiment to programmatic channel: a top-three global ad platform can now buy audience inside the most prominent consumer AI product. If the pilot performs, other DSPs, retailers and AI vendors are likely to follow, and sponsored placements could become a default part of assistant answers rather than an exception. For users, the trade-off is explicit — contextually relevant suggestions in exchange for sponsored content beneath answers. For the ad industry, it signals budgets beginning to follow attention from traditional search into conversational interfaces. The open question is effectiveness: given early reports of muted performance, the pilot's actual metrics, not the partnership's symbolism, will decide whether this becomes a durable channel.
