Amazon's Alexa for Shopping gets 100+ new AI tools for lists, subscriptions and billing
Amazon has added more than 100 shopping capabilities to its Alexa assistant ahead of the holidays, including list and registry management, subscription changes and billing help, rolling out now in the US.

What's new
Amazon has added more than 100 new shopping-related capabilities to Alexa ahead of the holiday season, TechCrunch reports. The update significantly widens what the company's AI shopping assistant can do, pushing it beyond product search and recommendations into account management: creating and editing lists, handling subscriptions, updating delivery details and resolving payment issues.
The features are rolling out to customers in the US, according to The Verge.
Lists, registries and subscriptions
According to The Verge, the headline additions let users create, edit and move items between shopping lists and gift registries. Amazon gives examples of natural-language requests such as asking Alexa to create a new shopping list or to show what is left on a wedding registry.
TechCrunch adds that the list functionality covers the full lifecycle: creating a list, registering it, viewing its contents, and adding or editing items.
Subscription management is another focus. TechCrunch says users can ask the assistant to adjust recurring deliveries — for instance, switching an item from monthly to every three months — while The Verge notes the assistant can also pause and modify recurring deliveries more broadly.
Delivery instructions can now be updated through the assistant as well. TechCrunch cites examples such as changing an address or adding drop-off details.
On the financial side, The Verge reports that Alexa for Shopping can answer billing questions, including queries about unrecognized charges and refunds. TechCrunch says users can also ask about Prime and Audible subscriptions and other payment problems.
The assistant behind the update
Alexa for Shopping launched officially in May, The Verge reports, and sits next to the search bar in Amazon's app and on its website. Its existing capabilities include setting price alerts, comparing items, and automatically purchasing products once they drop below a price the user has set.
The expansion also comes amid friction with outside AI shopping tools. According to The Verge, Amazon has resisted third-party shopping agents from companies such as Meta and Perplexity even as it builds out its own assistant.
TechCrunch notes that Amazon has shipped several AI-focused shopping features this year, including the assistant itself and a system that notifies users about new products and offers.
Adoption so far
Alongside the update, Amazon shared usage figures, as reported by TechCrunch: the number of people using agentic features has grown eightfold since the start of the year, and more than 400 million consumers have used Alexa for shopping over the past 12 months. TechCrunch does not specify how those figures were measured.
Why it matters
The update is a concrete example of agentic AI — systems that take actions on a user's behalf rather than just answering questions — becoming a mainstream consumer feature. Editing a registry, pausing a subscription or disputing a charge were previously tasks done by hand through menus and forms. Handing them to an assistant changes the default way millions of people will interact with one of the largest commerce platforms in the world.
The timing is deliberate: landing these capabilities just before the holiday shopping season positions Alexa as the interface for a period when list-making, gifting and subscription churn all spike.
There is also a competitive dimension. Amazon's resistance to agents from Meta and Perplexity, as The Verge reports, suggests the company intends to be the gatekeeper for AI-driven shopping on its own platform. If the 400 million user figure holds up, Amazon starts with a distribution advantage that outside agents will struggle to match — and it reinforces the incentive to keep those rivals locked out.
