AMD to acquire Fei-Fei Li's World Labs in $8.2 billion all-stock deal

AMD has agreed to acquire World Labs, the AI research startup co-founded by prominent researcher Fei-Fei Li, in an all-stock transaction worth approximately $8.2 billion, according to The Verge. The deal is expected to close by the end of the year.

What AMD is buying

World Labs launched in 2024 and was valued at $1 billion within months, The Verge reports. Its first commercial product, Marble, arrived in 2025 — a world generation model that lets users create interactive 3D worlds from a single prompt.

The lab's core bet is on foundation models that go beyond large language models, an ambition Li referenced when explaining the sale. That research direction, rather than any single product, appears to be the main asset AMD is acquiring.

Leadership and structure

Li will join AMD as executive vice president and chief scientist, reporting directly to CEO Lisa Su. According to The Verge, the World Labs team will keep its focus on advancing AI model research rather than being folded into existing product groups.

AMD said the acquisition strengthens "its ability to develop AI hardware, software and systems around the needs of emerging models and applications" — a signal that the company wants model researchers influencing its silicon roadmap, not just building software on top of it.

The rationale from both sides

Su argued that building compute platforms for the next generation of AI requires a deep understanding of how models are evolving. "Fei-Fei and the World Labs team bring exceptional research leadership and model expertise," she said in a statement quoted by The Verge, adding that the combined company aims to "strengthen the open AI ecosystem."

Li, writing on her Substack, framed the move as a continuation of the same judgment that led her to found the company in the first place: she had started World Labs to push foundation models beyond LLMs, and joining AMD is now "the right path" for that mission. She said the team intends to keep working openly with the community and the broader ecosystem.

Why it matters

The deal lands amid a wave of multi-billion-dollar AI consolidation. As The Verge notes, Nvidia announced earlier this month that it would acquire Hugging Face for nearly $13 billion. Chipmakers are no longer content to sell accelerators — they are buying model labs, research brands and developer platforms in an effort to own the full AI stack.

For AMD, the bet is that world models and spatial AI could become the next major workload after large language models, and that having the researchers who define those workloads in-house will shape better hardware, software and systems. For everyone else, the takeaway is starker: independent frontier labs are being absorbed by hardware giants at multibillion-dollar prices, and World Labs — valued at $1 billion about two years ago — just fetched more than eight times that figure.
