Anthropic merges Claude chat and Cowork, launches Docs and Slides in beta

One Claude instead of several tabs

Anthropic has collapsed its fragmented Claude app into a single product. The company's chat interface and Cowork, its workspace for longer-running tasks, are being merged into what Anthropic calls "one Claude," and the same interface now also hosts Artifacts and the Claude Design visual tool. According to Anthropic, the assistant itself now works out what a request requires, so capabilities that previously lived in separate tabs are reachable from any conversation, together with the context, skills, and connectors a user already has.

The company said the split had been a persistent annoyance: people had to decide in advance where a task belonged, and anything begun in one mode did not carry over to the other. TechCrunch reports that Anthropic heard this complaint often enough that it rebuilt the front end so Claude routes work automatically, with no tab switching.

Docs and Slides join the lineup

Alongside the merger, Anthropic introduced two new creation tools. Claude Docs and Claude Slides are launching in beta on paid plans and join Claude Design as the platform's productivity features.

According to The Verge, Docs behaves much like Google Docs: documents start private, can be shared with other editors, and support simultaneous editing. Collaborators, including Claude itself, can leave comments. Slides lets Claude draft presentations that users can tweak manually or by asking the assistant, present directly inside Claude, and export as PowerPoint or PDF.

Anthropic's announcement describes a typical workflow: a user asks for a weekly pipeline report and a five-slide summary for a leadership meeting, and Claude produces a document and a matching deck from the same conversation, asks clarifying questions when needed, and can be set to repeat the whole job every Monday without prompting. Everything created with Docs, Slides, or Design lives at a single shareable link that also opens on a phone, and TechCrunch notes that a task started on desktop can be monitored from the mobile app. Users can also choose how much autonomy Claude has: by default it asks before acting, but a setting lets it keep working and check in only when something needs human judgment.

Rollout plans

The unified experience is reaching Pro and Max subscribers first, across web, desktop, and mobile, over the coming weeks. Anthropic says there is nothing to enable and existing Cowork users keep their chats, projects, artifacts, connectors, and skills. Team and Free plans follow later, and Enterprise administrators will be notified at least 30 days before anything changes and can decide when to switch the new features on. TechCrunch also points out that the release follows an upgrade to Cowork's memory layer, which helps Claude retain user context across chats.

Why it matters

The launch puts Anthropic in more direct competition with Google. As The Verge notes, Anthropic's models are generally regarded as stronger than Google's, but Google's AI has a structural advantage: Gemini is natively wired into Docs, Sheets, and Slides, a suite Google expanded Gemini's role in earlier this year with document generation and slide creation features. Docs and Slides start to close that gap by giving Claude users fewer reasons to leave the assistant for a traditional office suite.

The merger is also a bet on how AI software should be structured. Rather than replicating the app-per-task model of desktop software, Anthropic is positioning chat as a single entry point that spawns documents, presentations, and long-running background work on its own. TechCrunch suggests the simplification is an example other vendors, OpenAI included, could learn from for cleaning up ChatGPT's interface. If the approach catches on, the battle over AI assistants may be decided less by raw model quality than by whoever makes the surrounding workflow least painful to use.
