Apple announces iPhone Duo, its first foldable iPhone, at $1,999

Apple's first foldable is official

Apple has announced the iPhone Duo, its first folding phone, at the company's "Surprise and shine" event, which also introduced the iPhone 18 Pro and the Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4, according to The Verge. The Duo carries a $1,999 price tag and is scheduled to reach stores on October 23.

In its basic form, the device is a book-style foldable with a 5.4-inch cover screen that opens to reveal a 7.6-inch Super Retina XDR display. The two screens share the same aspect ratio, the proportions resemble a passport, and the phone can run certain apps while partially closed, The Verge reports.

Internally, the Duo uses the same A20 Pro chipset as the iPhone 18 Pro and the same 48-megapixel fusion camera, though it omits the Pro model's variable aperture. There is no Face ID; instead, a Touch ID sensor sits along the edge of the phone. The device carries an IP68 rating for water and dust resistance, with Ceramic Shield on the front display and Ceramic Shield 2 on the back. Apple Pencil support is promised later this year.

Early hands-on impressions

The Verge tested the phone shortly after the announcement. The inner display has a matte finish that held up well against glare, the hinge felt smooth, and the display crease was nearly impossible to detect by touch, the publication found. The outer screen, by contrast, comes across as small compared with today's large conventional phones. The overall impression was that the device feels meaningfully different from what came before it.

Demand has already outpaced supply

Preorders opened at 8AM ET on Friday, October 16. Within less than an hour, delivery estimates on Apple's online store had slipped to late January 2027 for every configuration The Verge checked. Apple typically reserves some units for in-store sales, so buyers who missed the preorder window may still find stock at Apple Stores on launch day.

In a statement, Apple said preorder demand for the phone had been "nothing short of extraordinary" and that it was working to ship devices as quickly as possible. The company did not say whether stores would have inventory available for customers who did not secure a preorder.

Repairs will be expensive without coverage

Repair costs could sting for owners who skip AppleCare Plus. According to figures Apple published and that MacRumors reported, cited by The Verge, battery service runs $229, damage to the inner display costs $999, and other damage reaches $1,499, meaning a broken folding screen approaches the price of an entirely new mainstream phone.

A late arrival betting on software

Apple is not first to this form factor. Huawei, Samsung, and Xiaomi all shipped similarly sized foldables before the Duo arrived, something The Verge attributes to the reality that Apple and its rivals share the same global suppliers, making product secrecy extremely difficult. Apple's new CEO John Ternus and marketing head Greg Joswiak addressed the copycat question in interviews with TechRadar and Tom's Guide.

The Verge's own assessment is that the Duo's hardware is largely familiar to anyone who has followed Android foldables, while the software polish layered on top is what could make the device feel distinctive. That software experience, the publication argues, is the real question ahead of full reviews.

Why it matters

Apple's entry is the strongest validation yet of foldables as a mainstream category, arriving years after Samsung, Google, and others proved the market. The $1,999 price sits above both the Pixel 11 Pro Fold and the Galaxy Z Fold 8, testing how much premium buyers will accept, while preorder estimates sliding into 2027 within an hour signal demand that far exceeds early supply. The launch is also the first major hardware debut under new CEO John Ternus, making the Duo an early test of Apple's direction under new leadership. For buyers, the near-invisible crease and matte inner display answer long-standing criticisms of foldables, but the steep out-of-warranty repair prices will be a real consideration for anyone deciding whether to fold Apple's way.
