Apple Intelligence finally arrives in China with iOS 27.3 beta on November 4

Apple is finally bringing Apple Intelligence to China. According to The Verge, citing a MacRumors report on an announcement from Apple's Chinese newsroom, the features will debut in an iOS 27.3 beta launching on November 4, with the finished iOS 27.3 update scheduled to follow in December.

A first wave of features

The initial Chinese rollout focuses on Apple Intelligence's earlier capabilities rather than the suite's most advanced pieces. As The Verge lays out, users in China will get notification summaries, real-time translation, rewriting and proofreading tools, visual intelligence, and the ability to remove objects from photos.

The notable gap is the redesigned Siri. The Verge reports that the newer, AI-driven assistant Apple has been building will not be part of this launch, meaning Chinese users receive the foundational features first while the marquee assistant arrives on its own timeline.

Alibaba's Qwen fills the ChatGPT role

China's version of Apple Intelligence also comes with a distinctly local component. Apple says it has worked with Alibaba to build support for the company's Qwen chatbot into certain experiences, an arrangement The Verge compares to the OpenAI partnership Apple struck in 2024, which brought ChatGPT into iOS. The move suggests Apple now treats AI partnerships as regional decisions: a domestic model in China, an American one in other markets.

The road to this point

The launch caps a wait that stretched through much of the year. Apple Intelligence received regulatory approval in China in July, a step The Verge says signalled the release was drawing near. Then in August, Reuters reported that Apple had trained a dedicated large language model specifically for China, pointing to engineering work aimed squarely at that market. Those two developments now have a concrete payoff: a November beta and a December public release.

Why it matters

China is one of Apple's most significant markets, and its iPhone users have so far watched the company's AI features ship everywhere else. Even a partial feature set landing now, well after these tools reached other regions, closes a visible gap in what Apple can advertise to Chinese buyers.

The structure of the launch matters as much as its timing. By pairing with Alibaba and training a China-specific model, Apple is showing how global AI products must now be assembled market by market, navigating local approvals and partnering with domestic providers along the way — a template other companies pushing AI features internationally will likely study. And the staged rollout, with the new Siri excluded, sets expectations: Chinese users gain real capabilities in December, but Apple's flagship AI experience remains a later chapter.
