Apple launches Pass Designer beta for building and previewing Wallet passes

Apple has launched Pass Designer, a beta Mac tool for creating Apple Wallet passes with live iPhone and Apple Watch previews, semantic tag editing and built-in validation.

Apple launches Pass Designer beta for building and previewing Wallet passes

Apple has released Pass Designer, a new tool for creating and previewing passes for Apple Wallet. According to the page Apple published on its developer site, the tool is meant to serve organisations of every size, from a neighbourhood gym or small music venue to a national coffee chain or a global airline, and is currently distributed as a beta for the Mac.

A visual editor with live previews

Designers can start from templates Apple provides or from their own, and can produce the artwork a pass needs, such as logos, backgrounds and strip images, in whatever design software they already prefer before importing those assets to finish the pass inside Pass Designer. As edits are made, the tool refreshes a preview in real time, showing how the pass will look on both iPhone and Apple Watch. Apple says the preview uses the same rendering as iOS and watchOS, so what appears in Pass Designer is exactly what customers will see on their devices.

Editing and validation

The tool covers the practical details of pass construction. Background, foreground and label colours can be adjusted directly, and each pass type comes with standard fields for displaying information whose contents can be edited in place. Layouts can either take advantage of the latest advances in Apple Wallet or remain backward compatible with older setups.

Pass Designer also validates the pass while it is being built, flagging issues such as missing required key values or unexpected definitions. That pulls a class of errors which would otherwise surface late in the process back into the design phase.

Semantic tags

For boarding passes and event tickets, Apple's pass format supports semantic tags: structured data such as event dates, venue locations or flight details that the system uses to enable features like Siri Suggestions, Calendar integration and Maps directions. Pass Designer lets developers edit these tags in the UI and view a semantic and a non-semantic version of the same pass side by side. It can also automatically generate a backward-compatible pass structure from the semantic data, one that does not require semantic tags, so a pass keeps working where they may not be supported.

Availability

The beta requires macOS 27 or later. Downloading it involves signing in with an Apple Account, and Apple notes users may be prompted to complete a free registration and accept the Apple Developer Agreement. Documentation ships alongside the release. The tool surfaced on Hacker News's front page on 2 October.

Why it matters

Wallet passes are defined by structured data, and getting one right has typically meant reasoning about keys, field types and device behaviour without a dedicated first-party visual tool. Pass Designer consolidates that work: designers get true-to-device output as they edit, catch validation errors immediately, and can rely on the tool to generate compatibility fallbacks automatically. For smaller businesses without a development team, a guided editor lowers the barrier to shipping passes at all, while larger organisations benefit from semantic tags that hook passes into system features such as Siri and Calendar. The beta status and the macOS 27 requirement mean adoption will be gradual, but the direction is clear: Apple is investing in making Wallet something businesses of any size can design for.
