Apple opens Siri AI actions to third-party apps in iOS 27.3
Apple's iOS 27.3 update lets third-party developers tap Siri AI's personal context, natural language handling and new app skills, expanding the assistant well beyond Apple's own apps.

Siri AI gains third-party app access
Apple is letting Siri AI carry out actions inside third-party apps as part of the iOS 27.3 update rolling out Tuesday, according to The Verge. Developers can now build the assistant's newest capabilities into their apps, which means Siri AI can draw on a user's personal context, interpret natural language requests, and use awareness of what is currently on screen to complete tasks. The release is arriving as a Developer Preview, so the new hooks reach developers first.
App skills bundle several tasks into one action
The headline feature for third parties is a new mechanism Apple calls app skills, which lets developers combine multiple steps into a single action that a user can trigger by voice. Apple's developer documentation says users will not need to name an app in their request when that app is in the foreground, running a Live Activity, or already the topic of an ongoing conversation with Siri.
Apple offers a ride-sharing scenario to illustrate the flow: a person requests a ride through a ride-share app, watches the app's Live Activity updates while waiting, and then asks Siri to move the pickup location to a different address without ever naming the app. The assistant is expected to understand the request applies to the ride already in progress.
Apple's own apps get the same upgrade
Siri AI's expanded capabilities are also coming to Apple's first-party apps, including Calendar, Files, Finder, Journal, Mail, Maps, Messages, Music, Notes, Photos, Preview, Reminders, Safari, Shortcuts, and Weather. According to Apple, users will be able to do things like locate a coffee shop they visited the previous week or archive files that have not been opened in more than a year. The company also says users can simply ask Siri what it can do within each app to discover available actions.
A wider door than before
As The Verge notes, citing 9to5Mac, Apple had previously made only a smaller subset of Siri features available to third-party developers. The iOS 27.3 release replaces that limited access with integration options Apple says apply to all apps, marking the broadest opening of the assistant to the wider app ecosystem so far.
Why it matters
This is a structural change to how Siri works as a platform. Instead of an assistant largely confined to Apple's own apps, Siri AI becomes an agent that can act across the whole installed base, with developers deciding which functions to expose as skills. For app makers, it creates a new surface for discovery and engagement, but also new design work: chaining tasks into reliable single-action flows is a different discipline than building a traditional user interface.
For users, the shift points toward assistants that understand personal context and screen state well enough to act on intent rather than launch apps. How quickly that materialises depends on developer adoption, which the Developer Preview rollout is designed to encourage. If third parties embrace app skills at scale, iOS 27.3 could be remembered as the moment Siri moved from a voice shortcut layer to a genuine cross-app agent.
