Apple's redesigned iPad mini gets 8.5-inch OLED display and A20 Pro chip
Apple unveiled a redesigned iPad mini with an 8.5-inch OLED display, the A20 Pro chip with claimed 4.5x faster AI performance, IP67 water resistance, and a $699 starting price.

Apple has unveiled a redesigned iPad mini, describing it in a press release as the tablet's biggest update ever. Announced on Monday, October 26, the new model pairs a larger 8.5-inch OLED display with the A20 Pro processor, a thinner and lighter chassis, and water and dust resistance for the first time in the line.
A larger OLED screen in a familiar footprint
The display is the centerpiece of the refresh. Apple's Super Retina XDR panel uses OLED for pixel-level lighting control, producing deeper blacks and support for the P3 wide color gamut. According to TechCrunch, peak brightness reaches 1,200 nits — more than double the previous generation — alongside 600 nits of full-screen brightness for SDR and HDR content and a contrast ratio of 2 million to 1. A nano-texture display option is available to reduce glare in bright environments, a feature previously offered on the iPad Pro.
Despite the larger panel, Apple says the tablet keeps the same footprint as its predecessor thanks to bezels that are 24 percent thinner. The device measures 5.4 mm thick and ships in two finishes: a new midnight and a starlight. The press release also highlights an IP67 rating against water and dust, aimed at scenarios such as working outside in bad weather or reading near a pool.
A20 Pro and Apple Intelligence
Performance comes from the A20 Pro, whose 6-core CPU delivers up to 60 percent faster multithreaded performance for everyday work like photo editing and app multitasking, according to TechCrunch. The chip's 7-core GPU includes Neural Accelerators in each core, and Apple claims up to 4.5 times faster AI performance than the previous generation. Apple's press release additionally cites a dual 16-core Neural Engine.
The tablet runs iPadOS 27 with what Apple calls the next generation of Apple Intelligence and Siri AI, which can draw on a user's personal context to help them find things, answer questions, and interpret what is on screen.
Cameras, audio, and availability
Other updates include a 12-megapixel Center Stage front camera placed on the landscape edge for video calls, faster wireless and cellular connectivity, and fast-charge support. Apple also introduced what it calls an Acoustic Display, integrating specially designed woofers into the display for deeper bass and higher volume.
Pricing starts at $699 for the Wi-Fi model and $849 for the Wi-Fi and cellular version, according to TechCrunch. Pre-orders open on Wednesday, October 28, alongside a new Smart Folio accessory, with availability beginning Friday, November 6.
The announcement landed just days before Apple's "Pro and Tell" event scheduled for Wednesday, which TechCrunch notes suggests more hardware news is on the way this week. Dave Pakula, Apple's vice president of Hardware Engineering, said in the release that the new design, display, chip, and durability make this the most capable and versatile iPad mini the company has built.
Why it matters
The iPad mini is Apple's most portable tablet, and this update brings its display technology in line with the iPad Pro line, which had already moved to OLED and offered the nano-texture finish. The A20 Pro's per-core Neural Accelerators show how far Apple is pushing on-device AI down into even its smallest hardware — the mini is now pitched partly on AI performance and next-generation Apple Intelligence features rather than screen size alone. For buyers, the combination of a larger display in the same footprint, added water resistance, and faster connectivity addresses common complaints about compact tablets, though the $699 entry price keeps it firmly in premium territory. The timing, days ahead of Apple's Wednesday event, also signals that the mini is likely the opening move in a broader hardware rollout.
