According to The Verge, nothing about the Apple Watch Series 12 exterior signals a major release: the design, buttons, case sizes and sensor types carry over from earlier generations. The $399 watch matters because of what changed inside, which the review describes as groundwork for Apple's ambitions in health and AI wearables. The Verge frames the update in two parts — Apple catching up to an industry that has already adopted AI for interpreting health data, and Apple pushing into AI wearables that surface useful information based on a full day of context.

Two hardware changes define the generation. The S11 chip brings a faster CPU, GPU and Neural Engine, plus a protected region — Apple calls it a secure exclave — reserved for processing microphone data, an architecture that matters for Audio Intelligence, the upcoming suite of AI-powered ambient listening features. The second change is a complete redesign of the health sensor array. It does not record new kinds of data; instead it measures existing metrics more often, more accurately and with less power. The EKG electrodes grew for better skin contact, the photodiodes were reconfigured to gather reflected light more efficiently, and the optical LEDs are larger while drawing less energy. Ceramic returns as a case option, and the Ultra 4 shares these internals.

Heart rate every five seconds

The clearest benefit is genuinely continuous heart rate monitoring. Previous Apple Watches sampled heart rate only once every five minutes outside workouts to conserve battery. The Series 12 reads it every five seconds, at rest and during activity — a capability rivals have offered for years, but one The Verge considers a real improvement for people who monitor heart rate because of chronic illness.

Apple supported the claim with a white paper benchmarking the watch against a Polar H10 chest strap, described as the gold standard, and competitors including the Pixel Watch 4, Samsung Galaxy Watch 8, Oura Ring 5 and Whoop. The Verge's reviewer independently wore an H10 across two runs, a walk and rest periods, and the Series 12 stayed within five beats per minute of the strap at all times, trailing by about four seconds — a lag the reviewer says goes unnoticed in normal use.

A readiness score now, an AI app later

The headline launch feature is Apple's readiness score, a recovery gauge long popularized by Fitbit, Oura and Whoop. Apple computes it from overnight, daytime and weekly signals including activity, sleep score, resting heart rate, respiratory rate, wrist temperature and a new metric called recovery heart rate variability. Unlike the longitudinal HRV Apple has tracked for years, recovery HRV uses a different formula to capture short-term daily strain, and it depends on the new sensor array — so readiness requires a Series 12 or Ultra 4. The score takes seven nights of at least four hours of sleep to populate; on day eight you receive a rating from 0 to 10, where 0–1 signals you should recover, 2–4 suggests taking it easy, 5–7 means ready, and 8 or above is a green light to push hard. The reviewer landed on a 7 and argues the feature suits driven athletes who overtrain more than casual users.

The bigger AI additions are not here yet. Later this fall a redesigned Health app arrives with AI-generated insights, a longevity tab featuring a Health Age score, VO2 max assessment tests that use the iPhone camera, and the option to order a $119 blood panel through Quest Diagnostics. The Verge notes that many of the watch's most interesting features were unavailable for review as a result.

Speed and battery trade-offs

Siri AI queries run faster on the Series 12 than on an Ultra 3 in the reviewer's testing, though pauses while Siri processes remain. watchOS 27 adds a pinch gesture for selecting items, which The Verge says makes one-handed control the best it has been on an Apple wearable. Battery life still sits at the same 24-hour estimate as the Series 11, but fast charging offsets it: a 20-minute charge moved the watch from 20 to 64 percent, and the reviewer observed no noticeable battery penalty from continuous heart rate tracking.

Why it matters

None of these ideas are new — continuous heart rate, readiness scores and ambient AI listening all exist elsewhere. What differs, as The Verge points out, is scale: none of it has been implemented by a company with Apple's reach and reputation. The Series 12 is effectively a platform play, a watch that looks identical to its predecessors but carries hardware purpose-built for always-on measurement and AI features arriving over the coming year. The open questions are trust and timing. Thoughtful privacy engineering around microphone data may not reassure ordinary buyers about always-on listening, and several promised capabilities remain unreleased. For shoppers deciding today, it is an incremental upgrade; for the wearable market, it signals Apple committing to the AI health race in earnest.
