Asahi Linux officially supports Apple M3 Macs, with GPU and sleep gaps
Asahi Linux now officially supports Apple M3, M3 Pro and M3 Max Macs — except the Mac Studio M3 Ultra — while 3D graphics, sleep and HDMI remain unsupported.
Official support reaches the M3 generation
The Asahi Linux project has announced that its distribution is now officially supported on Macs built around Apple's M3 chips. According to Phoronix, the developers consider M3, M3 Pro and M3 Max machines far enough along that nearly everything works at a level comparable to the long-supported M1 and M2 hardware. The one device excluded from the announcement is the Mac Studio M3 Ultra, which remains unsupported for now.
GPU, sleep and HDMI are the remaining gaps
The most significant limitation is graphics. Phoronix reports that the developers acknowledge the current GPU support is neither performant nor power-efficient enough for 3D acceleration, although they expect further progress on that front in the coming months.
Two other gaps share a common cause. Phoronix notes that, without support for Apple's display coprocessor (DCP), M3 Macs running Asahi Linux cannot sleep, and the HDMI port on M3 MacBooks does not work either.
In practice, that points to a system that runs broadly like an M1 or M2 installation, minus suspend, HDMI output and usable 3D acceleration.
Upstreaming into the mainline kernel continues
The Asahi builds themselves are only part of the story. Phoronix reports that initial M3 support for basic booting has already landed in the mainline Linux kernel, but a range of further patches still has to be merged — expected in Linux 7.4 and later releases — before a stock kernel matches what Asahi Linux currently ships. Until that work is finished, users who want full M3 support will need the project's own builds, with additional details published on AsahiLinux.org.
Why it matters
Asahi Linux is the main project working to run Linux natively on Apple Silicon rather than inside a virtual machine, and its M1 and M2 support serves as the mature baseline for the effort. Bringing the M3 family into the officially supported fold widens the pool of modern Macs on which Linux is a practical option, and it shows the project keeping pace with Apple's chip cadence rather than lingering a generation behind.
The caveats are real, though. Sleep, HDMI and 3D acceleration are table-stakes features for a daily-driver laptop, so an M3 Mac is not yet a friction-free Linux machine — although the developers have signalled that GPU improvements are on the near-term roadmap.
The upstreaming effort also matters beyond Asahi itself. Once the remaining patches land in mainline kernels, every distribution that ships those kernels inherits the support, turning one community project's groundwork into general Linux-on-Apple-Silicon capability.
