ChatGPT can now generate animated GIFs from prompts or uploaded photos

OpenAI's Images 2.6 update adds native GIF generation to ChatGPT, with playback speed controls, frame-by-frame editing and faster image creation overall.

ChatGPT can now generate animated GIFs from prompts or uploaded photos

ChatGPT gains native GIF generation

OpenAI has added native GIF creation to ChatGPT, letting the chatbot produce short animated clips from a text prompt or from a photo supplied by the user. According to The Verge, the capability ships together with the company's new Images 2.6 model.

The change fills a real gap. Before this update, ChatGPT could not generate a GIF in one native step, so anyone wanting an animated result had to fall back on other tools or multi-step workarounds.

Editing controls come built in

The feature goes beyond simple generation. The Verge reports that users can change how fast a finished GIF plays, make edits to individual frames, and pass the result on to other people.

In one example published by OpenAI, the chatbot creates an animated GIF in response to a request for a dancing cat, then offers options to alter playback speed and step through the animation frame by frame. Frame-level access is the notable part: it treats the GIF as an editable sequence of images rather than a finished file the user cannot touch.

Images 2.6 speeds things up

GIF support is only one piece of the update. OpenAI says Images 2.6 also makes image generation faster across ChatGPT.

The usage figures show the scale involved. According to The Verge, OpenAI says people now generate more than 4 billion images each week across ChatGPT and its API, up from the 3 billion per week the company reported in September. Even small speed or quality gains to that pipeline touch an enormous volume of output.

Rollout and new API models

The Verge reports that Images 2.6 is reaching all ChatGPT and Codex users on the web, desktop and mobile apps.

Developers get their own additions. OpenAI is launching GPT-Image-2.6 Flare and GPT-Image-2.6 Sunburst in its API, which the company positions as delivering both faster generation and improved image quality.

Why it matters

GIFs remain one of the most widely shared formats on the web, used for everything from reaction images to quick product demos. Building GIF creation directly into ChatGPT, with prompt-to-GIF and photo-to-GIF paths plus frame editing, turns the chatbot into a lightweight animation tool that casual users already know how to operate, with no separate timeline software required.

The move also fits a broader pattern. As AI assistants converge on similar text and image capabilities, differentiation increasingly comes from convenience features that keep work inside a single interface. Playback controls, frame editing and instant sharing all reduce the reasons to leave ChatGPT for a dedicated editor.

The jump from 3 billion to 4 billion weekly images in roughly a month also suggests AI image generation has become routine rather than novel. If animated output proves similarly popular, generative GIFs could follow the same growth curve, bringing the usual questions about provenance and misuse along with them.
