ChatGPT Search Reddit citations fell 86% after apparent retrieval change

Reddit's share of citations in ChatGPT Search fell by more than 86% in a matter of days in mid-August, according to data from Promptwatch published in an analysis on dev.to. The tracker recorded an average citation share of 3.83% for Reddit between July 18 and August 7, 2026, followed by just 0.52% between August 14 and 17 — a relative decline of 86.4%.

What Promptwatch measured

Promptwatch monitors which sources AI answer engines cite when responding to queries. In ChatGPT Search, the shift was abrupt rather than a slow drift, and it stood out against more modest movements elsewhere in the tracker's dataset. That pattern pointed to something changing inside ChatGPT's own pipeline rather than a sudden, industry-wide loss of interest in Reddit content.

The August 8 fan-out change

The analysis ties the drop to a change on August 8 in ChatGPT's fan-out queries — the batch of searches an AI system runs to gather material before composing an answer. Before that date, roughly 0.37% of those fan-out queries used the site: operator, which restricts a search to a single domain. Afterward, the figure climbed to 16.8%.

Because domain-scoped queries steer retrieval toward particular websites, heavier use of them can change which pages are found and quoted even when the underlying content has not changed at all. Promptwatch therefore reads the pattern as a retrieval adjustment on ChatGPT's side, not evidence that Reddit was singled out for a penalty.

Google's AI answers moved less

For comparison, Promptwatch's tracking showed Google AI Overviews losing about 11% of its Reddit citation share and Google AI Mode about 30%, both gradually. The contrast underlines that citation behavior varies by product and retrieval design. It does not, on its own, explain why each system changed.

The caveats

Promptwatch describes its own figures as provisional and says data-collection problems cannot be ruled out. Both the exact size of the decline and whether it will persist remain open questions.

What site owners can check

For teams trying to tell their own indexing problem apart from a broader retrieval shift, Promptwatch suggests several diagnostics: compare Reddit-linked URLs cited before and after August 14 to see which pages or content types disappeared; confirm that important site pages surface for domain-scoped queries; test whether priority pages are crawlable and indexed for direct site: queries; monitor crawler activity from agents such as GPTBot; and re-run fan-out analyses regularly, comparing the results per AI model. None of this guarantees citations, but it helps distinguish a content or indexing issue from a change happening inside an AI product.

Why it matters

AI citations are not search rankings. A page can be fully crawled and indexed yet never appear in an AI answer if the model's retrieval layer does not fetch it for a given query — and a platform that was heavily cited last month can fade after an internal change that nobody announced. For publishers, marketers and community teams, the episode shows that visibility inside AI answers is volatile and largely outside their control, and that resting an AI discovery strategy on a single platform, citation pattern or model is fragile. The sturdier position combines useful, crawlable first-party content with measurement across several AI systems, so that when retrieval behavior flips — as it appears to have done here — the drop is diagnosable rather than mysterious.
