Dell's 14S student laptop adds colors, HDMI and a headphone jack below the XPS 13

Dell used the IFA 2026 stage to announce the Dell 14S, a new student-focused laptop that, according to The Verge, sounds a lot like a MacBook Neo: it ships in four colors, starts with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, and is positioned below the recently launched XPS 13. Exact pricing is still to be determined, but Dell representatives told The Verge in a briefing that the 14S will land close to the XPS 13's $700 starting price while being slightly more accessible. The machine is expected to go on sale later this fall.

Colorful, configurable and built for students

The 14S will be offered in linen (beige), dusty rose (pink), washed denim (blue) and velvet green — a considerably more varied palette than the XPS 13's. Buyers can also step the machine up to 16GB of RAM and choose either a 512GB or 1TB SSD, the same upgrade ceiling as Dell's pricier model.

There are other touches aimed squarely at the student buyer. According to The Verge, the laptop includes a 1080p webcam with support for Windows Hello face unlock, and Dell claims the battery can manage up to 23 hours of Netflix streaming — a headline figure that will need independent testing before anyone takes it at face value.

Ports and displays: where the compromises land

The 14S is not as thin or as light as the XPS 13, and its screen options are more basic. Both panels are non-touch LCDs: a 300-nit 1920 x 1200 display running at 60Hz, or a brighter 450-nit 2880 x 1800 panel at 120Hz.

The port selection, however, arguably beats the flagship's. The Verge reports that the 14S carries the same two USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 ports with DisplayPort and Power Delivery as the XPS 13, but adds an HDMI 1.4 output and a 3.5mm headphone jack — the latter being a convenience the XPS 13 notoriously lacks, to the visible frustration of The Verge's reviewer, Antonio G. Di Benedetto, who is currently testing that machine.

Modest chips, MacBook-style positioning

Inside, the 14S will be offered with either an Intel Core 5 320 or an Intel Core 7 350. That keeps it a rung below the XPS 13, which The Verge says is soon expected to gain Intel Panther Lake processor options that the 14S will never receive. In other words, this is not a laptop for anyone chasing peak performance — it is a laptop for a price point.

Why it matters

Laptop prices have been climbing across most of Dell's lineup, and the 14S is the company's attempt to keep a genuinely affordable option on the shelf — one that borrows the color-driven, student-friendly playbook that The Verge compares to the MacBook Neo. If Dell lands a price meaningfully below $700 while retaining the 16GB memory option, HDMI and the headphone jack, the 14S could become one of the more sensible budget purchases of the season.

The open question, as The Verge notes, is whether Dell has made the right compromises to hit that price. The non-touch display options and the capped processor lineup suggest exactly where the corners were cut. Those trade-offs will be easier to judge once real pricing is confirmed closer to the launch later this fall.
