DoorDash's text-to-order AI agent handles checkout inside Apple Messages

DoorDash has unveiled an AI agent that takes food orders over Apple Messages, handling search, recommendations and checkout inside the chat thread. A US beta waitlist is open to iOS users.

DoorDash's text-to-order AI agent handles checkout inside Apple Messages

An ordering agent that lives in Messages

DoorDash announced on Wednesday an AI agent that customers can text to place food orders through Apple Messages. According to TechCrunch, the tool understands prompts such as "order my usual," interpreting them as the order a user repeats every Friday night, and it can also field requests for a specific dish or a local recommendation.

The Verge reports that the feature builds on the Ask DoorDash chatbot that arrived in the company's app in June, but moves the whole interaction out of the app. Citing DoorDash's announcement, The Verge says the agent searches nearby restaurants, suggests a cart, and completes checkout without leaving the text thread, while learning user preferences and applying them to future orders. TechCrunch adds that the agent can send photos of the dishes it recommends and can manage group orders that combine different dietary needs and quantities in a single purchase.

A beta, not a full rollout

Despite the launch framing, the feature is not broadly available yet. The Verge describes the announcement as a preview: ordering by text is not live, and iOS users in the US can join a waitlist to try the experience in beta. The outlet says it has asked DoorDash about the wider rollout timeline and whether Android support is planned. TechCrunch likewise reports only a waitlist for US users at this stage.

Competitive context

According to TechCrunch, DoorDash is betting that the agent will help it stand out against rivals Uber Eats and Grubhub. The announcement also arrives amid a broader industry push toward personal AI agents that complete tasks on a user's behalf instead of requiring them to navigate apps and websites themselves.

Drones and retail returns announced alongside

DoorDash paired the agent news with two other initiatives. The first location for DoorDash Air, its drone delivery service, will be a pilot in an unspecified part of northern California with local food businesses including Chipotle and Popeyes, according to The Verge. DoorDash claims roughly 80 percent of typical restaurant orders are small and light enough for the aircraft to carry safely, and that initial testing delivered food to customers' doors within five minutes. No date for consumer availability has been given; TechCrunch separately confirms drone tests with select Northern California restaurants.

The company is also expanding a courier-based returns feature. Per The Verge, the service, currently live in select cities, will roll out across the US in November. It costs $7.99 per eligible return and requires no box or shipping label: a courier collects the item from the customer's door, brings it back to the retailer, and the return is processed. The aim is to help customers avoid missing return windows on purchases they cannot easily ship or drop off. The Verge notes that TikTok announced a comparable UPS-based return option the previous day.

Why it matters

The text-to-order agent is one of the most concrete examples yet of agentic commerce reaching mainstream consumers. Instead of browsing menus and tapping through checkout, a user states intent in a message thread and an AI does the searching, cart-building, and payment. If the bet pays off, the app becomes optional and the conversation becomes the storefront — a meaningful shift in how delivery platforms compete, since a remembered "usual" and a one-line reorder is a powerful retention mechanic. It also raises questions about how much users will trust agents with payment details and dietary preferences, and whether messaging endpoints such as Apple Messages become primary commerce channels. Rivals like Uber Eats and Grubhub now face pressure to match the experience rather than just the selection.
