FreeCORE ships a stable 15.0

FreeCORE, an independent effort to keep the TrueNAS CORE storage operating system alive on FreeBSD, has declared its 15.0-U1 release stable. According to the project's website, which reached the Hacker News front page, installations running TrueNAS CORE 13.3 can move to FreeCORE 15.0 through a direct in-place upgrade and then follow the project's own update train from there.

What is being released

The project presents its releases as a train with three stops: 13.3 is the base, 15.0 is the current stable version, and 15.1 is listed as next, with a changelog published alongside. The download is an ISO image, FreeCORE-15.0-U1.iso, and the site links an installation guide covering new deployments as well as upgrades.

Why TrueNAS CORE needed a successor

TrueNAS CORE is the FreeBSD-based descendant of FreeNAS, the long-standing open-source NAS distribution, and it uses OpenZFS as its storage foundation. Its original developer, iXsystems, has focused new development on TrueNAS SCALE, the Linux-based edition of the platform, leaving CORE users on maintenance releases. FreeCORE positions itself as the continuation for that installed base: the site credits FreeNAS, TrueNAS CORE, FreeBSD and OpenZFS as its foundations, and states that original authorship remains credited in the source code's license headers.

How the project is run

Development is hosted on Codeberg at codeberg.org/freecore, with a mirror on GitHub under the freecore-project organisation, and the project asks that bug reports describe reproducible problems. Day-to-day discussion happens in the #freecore IRC channel on Libera.Chat. The site lists separate contact addresses for general enquiries and for security reports, which signals at least a formal security reporting process for an operating system that typically guards production storage.

Why it matters

FreeNAS and TrueNAS CORE have run home labs, small-business servers and large storage systems for well over a decade, and those machines hold data on OpenZFS pools that administrators are reluctant to migrate on a whim. When upstream development moves on, as it did when the vendor prioritised the Linux-based SCALE edition, the realistic options become a disruptive platform migration or riding an unmaintained release. FreeCORE offers a third path: keep the FreeBSD and OpenZFS foundation, keep the familiar CORE system, and receive updates from a maintainership that has taken over the release train.

The in-place upgrade detail matters as much as the continuation itself. A storage server that must be rebuilt from scratch is a weekend of risk; an in-place update is a maintenance window. If 15.0-U1 delivers on that promise for the existing CORE installed base, the barrier to staying current drops sharply.

There are caveats. This is an independently run continuation rather than a vendor-backed product: its update cadence, hardware support and long-term stewardship depend on a new maintainer group, and anyone running it in production should weigh the project's security process accordingly. But as survival stories go, a working upgrade path from the last CORE release onto an actively maintained FreeBSD successor is exactly what users of this platform were hoping for.
