Garmin launches Fenix 9 with 3,000-nit OLED, faster map panning and new Epic training feature

Garmin has officially announced the Fenix 9, the newest generation of its outdoor-focused smartwatch line. According to The Verge, the watches will be available to order starting August 28 in a range of case and band color combinations.
Brighter screens and faster maps
The base Fenix 9 starts at $999.99 with a 43mm case and uses an OLED panel that reaches up to 3,000 nits, double the peak brightness of the model it replaces. The Verge reports that the watch also gains 50 percent more RAM and an upgraded map engine that speeds up panning across maps, a direct improvement for anyone navigating from the wrist. A sapphire lens rated for scratch resistance and 64GB of onboard storage round out the hardware changes.
Software additions
On the software side, Garmin is introducing a feature called Epic, which bundles workouts recorded over days, weeks or months into a single "Epic" view showing health and performance data across that period. The Verge also highlights new stamina tracking metrics and expanded rucking support, including the ability to change pack weight mid-workout instead of logging one fixed figure.
Battery life remains in multi-week territory: Garmin claims up to 29 days in smartwatch mode for the largest 51mm model.
Fenix 9 Pro adds titanium, satellite and solar
The Fenix 9 Pro starts at $1,099.99 and moves to a titanium case. According to The Verge, InReach satellite or LTE connectivity is available on all three Pro sizes — 43mm, 47mm and 51mm — for an extra $100 plus a $7.99 monthly subscription, extending the watch's usefulness well beyond cell coverage.
The largest Pro model is also the first in the lineup to carry a 1.5-inch OLED display, larger than the 1.3-inch and 1.4-inch panels used on the smaller case sizes across the range. The 47mm and 51mm Pro models offer a solar-charging display option that Garmin says can stretch battery life to as much as 57 days, though that figure assumes three hours outdoors per day in 50,000 lux conditions.
Why it matters
The Fenix line sits at the premium end of the wearable market, with the base model starting just under a thousand dollars. Garmin's upgrades here target the specifics that matter to its audience: legibility in direct sunlight, faster map rendering, and connectivity that works far from towers. Moving to a 3,000-nit OLED while keeping month-long battery claims — and pushing even further with solar charging on the Pro — signals that Garmin still sees long runtime as its key differentiator. For hikers, runners and ruckers who rely on wrist navigation, the extra RAM and smoother map panning may be the most immediately noticeable change of this generation.
