Google adds CSV-free password manager switching on Android
Google's new Android switching flow moves passwords and passkeys directly between manager apps, no CSV export required. 1Password, Bitwarden and Dashlane are supported today.

A direct handoff between password apps
According to TechCrunch, Google on Thursday announced a new password manager switching experience for Android that does away with the CSV file shuffle that has long defined the process of moving credentials from one app to another.
The mechanics are straightforward. A user opens the password manager they want to switch to and chooses the option to import or copy passwords from their previous manager. Android then detects the password manager apps installed on the device and coordinates the transfer between the two. Before anything is committed, the user can review exactly what is being moved and approve the transfer in a few taps.
Passkeys move too
Passwords are not the only thing in scope. TechCrunch reports that the new system also supports transferring passkeys, so users who have adopted the newer sign-in method will not need to set their passkeys up again after changing managers. That detail matters because passkey portability has been an open question as the technology spreads, and re-registering a passkey at every site is arguably more tedious than re-entering a password.
Google also framed the feature as a security improvement. A CSV export places every credential into a single unprotected plain-text file while it travels between apps, and the direct app-to-app handoff avoids that exposure window altogether.
Rollout and compatibility
The experience is already available in Google's own password manager and on select partner apps. 1Password, Bitwarden, and Dashlane are supported today, with additional apps expected to follow. Google says the feature will reach all devices running Android 8 or above, which keeps the door open for older hardware rather than reserving the capability for recent flagships.
Why it matters
Switching costs are one of the main reasons people stick with a password manager they no longer like, or never adopt one at all. The traditional migration path, exporting a CSV and importing it elsewhere, is both fiddly and risky: a single stray copy of that file can undo years of careful credential hygiene. By letting the operating system broker a reviewed, tap-to-approve transfer between apps, Google lowers the barrier to changing tools and effectively reduces lock-in across the password manager ecosystem.
The passkey angle is the more forward-looking part. As passkeys replace passwords at more sites, the ability to carry them between managers becomes a precondition for genuine user choice. An Android feature that treats passkeys as portable data, and works across the large installed base of Android 8 and above devices, signals that credential portability is being handled as a platform responsibility rather than something each app must solve on its own.
