Google adds live voice conversations and mobile audio recording to Gemini Notebook

Google has expanded Gemini Notebook with real-time voice conversations, a mobile audio recorder and a set of new interactive learning outputs, according to a dev.to report summarising the company's official announcement. The announcement, which dev.to dates to September 15, 2026, also marks a further step in the transition from the NotebookLM name toward the Gemini product ecosystem.

The update changes how users interact with the tool. Rather than treating a notebook purely as a place to read generated summaries or listen to pre-made audio, users will be able to talk to it and feed it spoken material captured on the go.

Live voice conversations

The central addition is the ability to hold a real-time spoken conversation with a notebook. According to dev.to, Google says the feature will work in the Gemini Notebook mobile app as well as across web and mobile, and will support nearly 100 languages.

The cross-platform support matters for workflow continuity. A user could start working with source material on a computer and continue the same discussion from a phone, instead of voice interaction being locked to a single device.

The report draws a useful distinction between having an audio output and having a live exchange. Audio Overview, the feature that turns sources into generated audio, remains part of the product and is described as continuing to expand across formats and languages. The new voice capability goes further by making the supplied sources the basis of an actual conversation.

Mobile audio recording

Google is also adding an audio recorder to the mobile app, positioned for capturing lectures and a user's own thoughts while away from a desk. Recordings can then be brought into a notebook and revisited later.

dev.to notes that the announcement does not specify technical details such as recording limits, storage handling or country-by-country availability, so those points remain to be confirmed as the feature reaches accounts.

New learning outputs

Alongside the voice features, the update broadens what can be generated from notebook sources. Google lists quizzes, flashcards and short videos through a feature called Short Video Overviews. These join the existing output formats and are aimed at learners, which dev.to describes as the announcement's stated focus, though the same formats could serve trainers or teams turning reference documents into more digestible material.

Rollout timing and the student offer

According to dev.to, Google said mobile audio recording would begin arriving the week after the announcement, with expanded voice capabilities and interactive learning outputs rolling out over the following weeks. Availability is therefore expected to vary during the rollout.

The announcement also includes a learner offer: eligible U.S. college students can receive a free year of Google AI Pro, with broader regional offers elsewhere. The report does not establish general Gemini Notebook pricing or confirm whether every new capability ships with every plan.

Why it matters

The update moves Gemini Notebook from a largely one-directional tool, where you upload sources and receive generated text or audio, toward a genuinely interactive, multimodal one. Voice input and real-time conversation lower the friction of engaging with source material, and mobile capture means the product can collect raw material at the moment it happens rather than after the fact.

The rebrand from NotebookLM is also more than cosmetic. As dev.to notes, it places the notebook inside Google's wider Gemini ecosystem while keeping the source-grounded learning focus, which signals where Google intends to keep investing.

Questions remain. The announcement, as summarised by dev.to, says nothing about enterprise concerns such as permissions models, record retention or integrations with internal systems, gaps worth resolving before a team makes the voice features part of a recurring process. For learners, though, the combination of spoken interaction, mobile recording and varied output formats makes Gemini Notebook a notably more flexible study tool than it was before.
