Google AI Mode prices identical products 21.6% higher than traditional search, study finds
Productrise tracked over 2 million listings across 23 days and found Google AI Mode prices the same products 21.6% higher than traditional search, with only 1.28% overlap between the two result sets.

What the study measured
Productrise, an e-commerce analytics firm, ran a 23-day comparison of Google's AI Mode against traditional search, from August 9 to August 31, 2026. The team submitted identical shopping queries to both surfaces at the same moment on the same day, collecting more than 100,000 results pages and AI Mode responses covering over 2 million product listings. The analysis, which gained traction on the front page of Hacker News, asked a narrow question: when the exact same product appears in both interfaces, does the price differ?
Matched products cost more in AI Mode
Among products that ranked in both AI Mode and traditional search for the same query, the displayed price in AI Mode averaged 21.6% higher, according to Productrise. Because the product, query and timing are held constant, the company treats this as its most controlled comparison — the interface itself is the only thing that changes.
The gap is wider when every priced listing is counted rather than just the matched pairs. The median listing in AI Mode sat at $149, against $100 in traditional search, roughly 49% higher. Selection plays a role here: AI Mode offers far fewer options, averaging 3.9 products per response versus 27.8 in traditional search and accounting for just 12.3% of all listings tracked.
Barely any overlap between the two
The two systems rarely agree on what to show. Only 1.28% of products ranking in traditional search also appeared in AI Mode for the same search on the same day; when both sides responded to a query, they averaged 0.94 shared products. Productrise says this echoes an earlier study from July, which found AI Mode ranked roughly 5% of the products that rank in traditional search overall.
On the matched products, prices diverged 38.1% of the time, and when they did, AI Mode was the more expensive option in 68.4% of those cases — about two-thirds. The primary seller also differed on 49.6% of matched products, meaning AI Mode frequently pointed shoppers to a different merchant for an identical item.
Caveats to keep in mind
This is a single-vendor study from a company that sells e-commerce analytics, and it has not been independently verified. The published piece itself carries a caveat that the price shown at the top of an AI Mode result may not be what a shopper ultimately pays, because the merchant with the lowest price may still capture the click once the user engages with the listing. In other words, the study measures displayed prices, not completed purchases.
The data also shows correlation rather than mechanism. It does not establish whether AI Mode's ranking gives price less weight than traditional search does, or whether other factors — merchant selection, data feeds from Google's Shopping Graph, or how AI Mode assembles its much smaller result sets — explain the difference.
Why it matters
If AI-mediated search consistently leans toward pricier inventory, the effects ripple outward. Shoppers lose the implicit price competition that a crowded traditional results page provided; the visible work of comparing tabs is swapped for a smaller, pre-selected set that skews expensive. Merchants who compete on price — an approach traditional Google shopping rankings have historically rewarded — may see that edge diluted in AI Mode and will need to rethink how they optimize for AI-driven discovery. Because AI Mode concentrates attention on roughly four products instead of nearly twenty-eight, whichever items make the cut carry much higher traffic stakes. And for Google, the finding invites a broader question about whether its AI surfaces act as neutral conduits or as de facto merchandising decisions — one that advertisers, regulators and competing search engines are likely to watch closely.
