Google Cloud and Accenture launch joint unit to push Gemini into enterprises

Google Cloud and Accenture form a Gemini deployment unit

Google Cloud is pairing with Accenture on a dedicated joint group whose job is getting Google's AI products actually installed and working inside large companies. According to TechCrunch, the unit — called Accenture Gemini Enterprise Business Group — will place forward-deployed engineers (FDEs) inside enterprises to speed up adoption of Google's AI tools, and Google will train up to 1,000 of the consultancy's engineers to build custom applications on the Gemini Enterprise platform. TechCrunch notes the deal was first reported by The Wall Street Journal.

A response to a lopsided market

The partnership is a direct answer to Google's weak position in enterprise AI spending. TechCrunch cites August data from Ramp showing Google holds roughly 6% of enterprise AI spending among U.S. businesses, compared with 43.5% for Anthropic and 39.7% for OpenAI.

The Accenture arrangement extends an already aggressive year for Google's deployment strategy. TechCrunch reports that Google Cloud earlier launched a $750 million partner ecosystem commitment that embedded its own FDEs across consultancies including Capgemini, Cognizant and Deloitte, and signed a multi-year partnership with CVC Capital Partners to send FDEs directly into the investment firm's portfolio companies.

An industry-wide build-out

Forward-deployed engineering units have become the sector's standard response to a stubborn problem: enterprises buy AI credits and subscriptions but often cannot weave them into workflows that save or make money. TechCrunch reports that OpenAI, Anthropic, Microsoft and Amazon have all recently created separate units based on the wager that implementing AI models can grow into a standalone business of enormous scale.

Consultancies face pressure from the same trend. Boutiques such as Ode, which works with Anthropic, and OpenAI's The Deployment Co. compete directly with their traditional business. Accenture has been hedging all year, per TechCrunch: a Microsoft FDE practice in March, a ServiceNow initiative in May and a joint program with SAP in June. The Google tie-up continues that pattern rather than starting it.

The capital hanging on the outcome

The urgency is financial. Google Cloud generated $24.8 billion in the second quarter, with enterprise AI responsible for a significant portion of that growth, according to TechCrunch. But Alphabet has reportedly accumulated $811 billion in purchase commitments and contractual obligations as of June 30, and hyperscalers broadly are pouring hundreds of billions of dollars a year into chips, data centers and power capacity while AI-linked revenue still amounts to only a fraction of that outlay.

That return has not yet arrived in the form companies and investors need, TechCrunch observes, and the enterprises doing the buying are themselves struggling to demonstrate returns on their own AI budgets — precisely the bottleneck FDEs are meant to clear.

Why it matters

This deal is less about consulting fees than about distribution. If enterprise adoption stalls because companies lack the expertise to integrate AI, the enormous capital commitments underpinning the entire build-out become far harder to justify. Google's 6% spending share shows that having capable models is not the same as having them deployed at scale. By putting trained engineers on the ground through one of the world's largest consultancies, Google is effectively buying an implementation and sales channel for Gemini — and raising the stakes in a deployment race where vendors now compete on services as much as on model quality. For Accenture, the calculation cuts both ways: it gains privileged access to a major AI platform while becoming shared infrastructure in a market whose winners are still undecided.
