Google confirms AI Overviews can auto-expand and push blue-link results down the page
Google has confirmed that AI Overviews can automatically open into full-length answers for some queries, pushing traditional blue-link results further down the search results page.

What Google confirmed
Google has confirmed that AI Overviews in Search can now expand on their own. According to a Search Engine Land report cited in a dev.to write-up, Google confirmed the behaviour on 28 August 2026. For queries where its systems decide a fuller response serves the searcher better, the previously collapsed overview opens automatically into a detailed answer before the person taps anything.
The significance is positional. AI Overviews already sit above the traditional blue links on eligible results pages, and an expanded overview occupies more of the screen before a user reaches the organic listings that have historically driven most search traffic.
How the expansion works
An AI Overview normally begins as a compact answer with a Show More control for extra detail. Under the confirmed behaviour, Google can instead present a complete, detailed response resembling the layout of its separate AI Mode, and the Show More control is removed in those cases.
One constraint limits the feature: Google said the automatic expansion can be cancelled when the person has already started scrolling toward content below the overview, which reads as an effort to respect a clear intent to reach the standard results.
What Google has not said is equally notable. It has not disclosed which query categories receive the expanded treatment, how often expansion occurs, or which signals determine that a longer answer is worth showing.
Effects on organic search
The change is a layout shift rather than a ranking change, but the consequences can feel similar. When the generated answer resolves the searcher's question, some users will have less reason to scroll to a publisher or business site. The dev.to write-up also raises the opposite possibility: a detailed overview can surface citations that introduce searchers to sites they did not already know.
Nobody can yet put a number on the impact. Google has published no click-through-rate data for the dynamic expansion, and outcomes will vary with the query, the quality of the answer, the cited sources and what the searcher needs. Someone comparing providers or hunting for a local service often wants more than a summary.
The practical conclusion in the write-up is that a strong conventional ranking remains valuable but no longer guarantees prominence on every eligible page. Teams that track keyword positions alone could miss how their pages are displayed, cited or displaced.
What site owners can do
Google has issued no optimization checklist for this feature, and the dev.to piece argues against treating it as a new technical shortcut. Its suggested priorities centre on usefulness:
- Match content to the real question rather than broad, loosely related keyword coverage.
- Answer important questions directly, then add supporting explanation, examples and decision-making context.
- Keep essential business details clear, including offerings, service area and contact paths.
- Review the results layout for priority queries to see whether AI Overviews appear and how far organic results move.
- Measure organic performance over time instead of assuming a ranking change alone explains traffic movement.
Why it matters
Auto-expanding overviews are a visible interface change that directly increases the screen space Google devotes to its own generated answers, setting it apart from earlier updates such as Gemini-based AI Overview improvements and conversational follow-ups in AI Mode. Blue links remain on the page and Google describes the expansion as selective, not a replacement for organic results. But for businesses that depend on search discovery, the distance between a query and a website has grown on affected queries. That makes checking real result layouts part of basic SEO practice, and it splits two metrics that used to move together: visibility within the results page and actual visits to the site.
