Google launches native Gemini app for Windows with Alt+Space overlay access

Google has launched a native Gemini app for Windows, moving its AI assistant out of the browser and onto the desktop as a standalone program. According to Google's announcement on its official blog, the app is available globally for Windows 10 and 11 as of the announcement, and can be downloaded from Google's Gemini desktop page. The news also surfaced on the front page of Hacker News.

A keyboard shortcut for instant access

The capability Google leads with is speed. Pressing Alt + Space at any time brings up Gemini as an overlay on top of whatever is currently on screen. Google presents this as a way to preserve focus: verify a fact in a document, gather title ideas for a presentation, then dismiss the panel and return to the task at hand without switching windows or tabs.

A dedicated space for deeper work

Beyond the quick overlay, the app itself offers the full range of features Gemini users already have elsewhere. Google says multi-step tasks can be delegated to Gemini Spark, an always-on personal AI agent, and that Gemini can pull information from Google apps such as Gmail and Google Drive to produce things like project summaries. The goal is to give desktop users a dedicated workspace for work that outgrows a single prompt.

Media creation in the same window

The desktop app also consolidates Google's generative media tools. Users can create custom images with Nano Banana for materials like presentations, and direct video output with Gemini Omni. Google stresses that these creative options sit alongside the assistant's other capabilities, so moving from drafting text to producing media does not require jumping between services.

Built to stay out of the way

On performance, Google describes the app as lightweight and quiet, designed to run without noticeably slowing down the PC. The company also frames the launch as a first step, saying additional native desktop capabilities will roll out over time, though it has not specified what those will be or when they will arrive.

Why it matters

Until now, most Windows users reached Gemini through a browser. A native app changes that in two ways. First, the Alt + Space overlay turns the assistant into something summoned reflexively during other work rather than a destination visited deliberately — the kind of habit loop that tends to decide which AI tool people actually keep using.

Second, it puts Google's assistant on Microsoft's home platform. Windows already ships with Microsoft's own AI assistant built in, so Google is effectively competing for the same reflex: which helper a user calls when a question comes up mid-task. A globally available app with a keyboard-level shortcut is Google's bid to stay in that race even outside its own browser and operating system.

The feature set also signals direction. Handing multi-step work to an agent and letting it read across Gmail and Google Drive points toward assistants that act across applications rather than merely answering isolated questions, while the bundled image and video generation tools fold media creation into the same flow.

What the announcement leaves out is equally telling. There is no mention of deeper operating system integration, and Google's own language — more native capabilities over time — suggests the current app is closer to a polished front end for existing Gemini features than a fully reworked desktop experience. How far Google takes the native side, from file access to system-level actions, will determine whether this becomes a fixture of the Windows desktop or another assistant that most users never think to summon.
