Google launches Pics, a Nano Banana-powered AI design suite inside Workspace

Google has launched Pics, an AI image creation and editing suite for its Workspace customers, built on the Nano Banana image generation and editing model. According to The Verge, the product also sits within Google's broader Gemini efforts, and it arrives both as a standalone app and as an embedded feature in Docs and Slides, with Drive integration on the way.

Precise edits instead of endless re-prompting

Google says Pics is aimed at users who need business-ready visuals rather than casual experiments. In its announcement, the company acknowledged that teams producing images for campaigns and presentations have run into inconsistent results, repeated re-prompting and clunky handoffs between multiple apps.

The feature set reflects that focus. According to Google's blog, Pics offers object segmentation, which lets users isolate a single element and transform it while leaving the rest of the image untouched. Users can attach text comments to specific areas, request targeted changes and run several edits in one pass. Text inside an image can be modified or translated without disrupting the layout or switching fonts, and a single prompt produces multiple generations so users can choose the strongest option.

The Verge reports additional capabilities: creating images from scratch, upscaling to 2K or 4K resolution, and cropping into presets suited to web, social media, print and digital formats. Designs can be shared with teammates and edited collaboratively.

Docs and Slides first, Drive next

The deeper pitch is integration. Google says people handle billions of images across its productivity apps every month, and Pics is meant to eliminate the routine of copying, pasting and switching tabs. The Docs and Slides integrations are live from launch day: selecting an image in a document or deck opens the full Pics toolset in place. Drive support follows in the coming weeks, and a standalone version is available at pics.new.

Who gets access

Google says Pics is rolling out over the coming weeks to all Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers and to most Workspace business customers. The Verge lists the specific tiers: Business Standard, Business Plus, Enterprise Standard and Enterprise Plus Workspace plans, alongside the personal Google AI Pro and Ultra subscriptions and the Google AI Pro for Education plan. The Verge also notes that the tool had been available to testers since shortly after Google I/O in May.

Aiming at Canva and Adobe Express

Both sources frame Pics as a direct challenge to dedicated design platforms such as Canva and Adobe Express. Google pitches it for posters, flyers, social posts and digital illustration, and suggests users will not need graphic-design skills to produce polished results. As The Verge observes, that positioning signals Google's intent to keep Workspace users from paying separately for third-party tools when basic creative work can happen inside the suite they already subscribe to.

Why it matters

Pics moves generative image editing out of standalone chatbots and into the productivity suite where business documents actually get made. By bundling a capable design tool into plans customers already pay for, Google puts pricing pressure on Canva and Adobe Express while steering its Nano Banana model toward commercial use rather than novelty. The Docs and Slides embedding also sketches Google's broader direction with AI: capabilities delivered inside existing workflows instead of as separate destinations. If Drive lands as planned, in-place image editing looks set to become a default expectation across Workspace rather than a distinct app.
