Google offers US college students a free year of its $19.99/month Gemini AI Pro plan

The offer

Google is giving eligible college students in the United States 12 months of its paid Google AI Pro subscription at no charge. According to dev.to, citing an announcement Google made on August 19, 2026, the promotion covers the Gemini plan the company values at $19.99 per month, and students must redeem it by December 31, 2026.

What students get

Students who claim the promotion receive a year of Google AI Pro. Google says the plan includes Gemini usage limits four times higher than standard, access to Gemini Spark, integrations with Google apps such as Gmail and Docs, and 5 TB of Google One storage.

Google has also added a student hub inside the Gemini app for participants, dev.to reports. It is built around learning workflows and includes study notebooks plus Deep Research in Gemini Live. Google presents these as a student-focused experience rather than a new business plan or developer API offering.

A smaller deal outside the US

Students outside the United States get a separate, more modest package. Google describes a 12-month Google AI Plus offer for other markets, with Gemini usage limits twice as high and 400 GB of storage. Google also references bundled discounts with YouTube Premium for students in those regions, meaning eligibility, benefits and terms all vary by location.

The strings attached

Google describes the US promotion as a free trial, which shapes what happens when it ends. After the 12-month term, the standard Google AI Pro price applies unless the student cancels. The offer is therefore generous but not a permanently free plan, and dev.to suggests students read the terms before building daily study routines around the higher limits or filling the storage allowance.

The boundaries matter too. Access to Gemini through this promotion does not by itself grant access to every Google AI product or developer service. Anyone considering Gemini for a specific workflow should verify the relevant product terms rather than assume a consumer subscription covers all of Google's AI services.

Why it matters

The giveaway is a deliberate adoption play for Google's paid AI tier. By placing the higher-capacity version of Gemini — bundled with substantial storage and Workspace-style integrations — in the hands of students, Google is seeding its premium product among people who will soon carry those habits into internships, startups and full-time jobs. Businesses that already run on Google tools should expect new hires to arrive with practical expectations about AI assistance inside Gmail and Docs, which can drive internal demand for AI-enabled writing and research workflows.

Just as importantly, the promotion is not a pricing signal. Google has not announced a broader price cut for Google AI Pro, new enterprise terms, or developer pricing changes, and dev.to cautions against inferring any of these from a consumer student offer. Teams evaluating Gemini should judge it on their own use cases and long-term costs once promotional access lapses.
