Google has started taking preorders for Googlebook, a new laptop category built around its Gemini Intelligence platform. According to a dev.to post covering the launch, the base configuration starts at $899, with devices scheduled to reach shelves on October 4 in the United States and October 5 in the other countries Google has listed.

Google is not building the hardware alone. The dev.to write-up reports that Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP and Lenovo will all produce Googlebook devices, which would give the category a wide hardware footprint from the outset while Google keeps the software and AI layer at its center.

Built around Gemini and Android

Googlebook runs its own operating system, Googlebook OS, and is designed to pair closely with Android phones: users will be able to reach Android apps and files from the laptop rather than treating it as a self-contained machine.

The launch leans on on-device Gemini capabilities, including features named Magic Pointer, Rambler and Create My Widget. Google first presented Googlebook in May 2026 as a distinct category designed for Gemini Intelligence, highlighting the Glowbar design and the Magic Pointer concept at the time. Two commitments stand out. Buyers also get a bundle that includes 12 months of Google AI Pro, 5 TB of cloud storage and Gemini Advanced tools, plus limited-period YouTube Premium and Photoshop benefits.

Not framed as a Chromebook replacement

The launch information described by dev.to does not position Googlebook as a replacement for Chromebooks and offers no feature-by-feature comparison. The clearest distinctions are its dedicated operating system, its focus on Gemini Intelligence and its Android continuity. The announcement also does not spell out Google Workspace administration or collaboration capabilities, so organizations are left to judge the device on what has actually been disclosed: Android app and file access, on-device Gemini functions, the bundled services and the stated update horizon.

Why it matters

Googlebook is Google's most direct attempt yet to give Gemini a hardware home of its own. Instead of treating Gemini purely as a cloud service layered onto existing products, Google is selling a dedicated device category, with its own OS, a ten-year update promise and a five-manufacturer hardware ecosystem, where on-device AI is central to the pitch rather than an add-on.

The partner model echoes the approach Google used to scale Android and ChromeOS hardware, and the $899 entry price places Googlebook alongside mainstream premium laptops rather than in experimental territory. The open questions matter just as much: how the category coexists with Chromebooks, whether features such as Magic Pointer and Rambler hold up in everyday use, and whether tighter phone-to-laptop workflows justify the platform for teams already working across Android devices.
