Google renames NotebookLM to Gemini Notebook and adds live chats, recording and study tools

NotebookLM is now Gemini Notebook

Google has retired the NotebookLM name and turned the product into Gemini Notebook, a synced knowledge workspace that spans the Gemini app and the notebook tool itself. According to a post on dev.to that compiles Google's official 2026 updates, the rename was confirmed in a Google Workspace announcement on July 16, 2026, with the new branding appearing across interfaces over the following weeks. The switch needed no administrator action, and existing users were not asked to migrate their notebooks by hand.

The rebrand caps a longer shift. On April 8, 2026, Google introduced Notebooks in Gemini as personal knowledge bases meant to hold chats, files and projects together. The central technical detail is synchronisation: a notebook stays in step between the Gemini app and NotebookLM, so one collection of sources and related conversations follows the user across both surfaces rather than being reassembled for every new session.

What the September update adds

A September 15, 2026 update, as relayed by dev.to, brought several new capabilities:

• Live conversations with notebook material, so users can discuss their sources in a real-time back-and-forth instead of only reading static summaries.
• Mobile audio recording, which opens a capture path for getting spoken material into a notebook from a phone.
• Interactive overviews, including quizzes, flashcards and video summaries.
• Student offers, among them a complimentary year for eligible U.S. college students and free Google AI Plus in a number of markets.

Google has framed these additions around studying, but the mechanics involved, such as talking to, capturing for and reviewing a bounded set of documents, are the same ones that research, planning and documentation work rely on.

Rollout is phased and plan-dependent

The rollout is phased, according to the dev.to summary, starting on the web with mobile support and wider regional availability to follow. Access to some capabilities and offers is tied to subscription status, and Google has not published a full pricing table or a feature-by-plan matrix. That means users should not assume every feature is live on every interface, in every country or on every plan at the same time; anyone building a workflow around a specific capability should verify current availability for their account and region first.

Why it matters

The significance goes beyond the name. Google is positioning the notebook as a standing context store inside Gemini: a defined home for project files and related chats that users can return to without restating their background each time. For teams that consult the same policies, customer research or briefs over and over, that could cut a substantial amount of repetitive setup work.

Two caveats are worth keeping in view. Output quality will still depend on the material placed in the notebook and on how carefully people review what the model generates; Google's announcements establish features, not accuracy guarantees. And while the quiz and flashcard tools suggest obvious internal training or onboarding experiments, the source materials present them as study features, not as announced business capabilities.
