Google rolls out Gmail Live, Docs Live and Keep Live voice modes

Google is adding hands-free, conversational AI to three of its core productivity apps. According to The Verge, the new modes — Gmail Live, Docs Live and Keep Live — let people manage their inbox, documents and notes by talking rather than tapping through menus or typing search terms. TechCrunch reports that the features, first previewed at Google I/O in May, are now rolling out to mobile users in English.

Gmail Live is built around retrieving information that would otherwise require digging through long threads. The Verge gives the example of asking when a child's next school event is: the assistant locates the relevant email wherever it sits in the inbox, reads a spoken summary back to you, and links the source messages in an on-screen transcript. Conversations persist, so follow-up questions don't restart the session, and you can interrupt the assistant mid-sentence to change direction. TechCrunch notes the assistant is powered by Gemini and displays a live transcript while you chat.

Docs Live drafts from spoken descriptions

In Docs, the assistant turns conversational descriptions into structured writing. The Verge says it can summarize lengthy documents or rework material into formats such as a business proposal. Both outlets report that, if granted permission, Docs Live can pull context from Gmail, Drive, Chat and the web to personalize its output — TechCrunch describes the result as a first draft the user can then refine.

Keep Live turns speech into organized notes

Keep Live works as a spoken scratchpad. The Verge reports that Gemini contextualizes dictated notes without demanding specific wording — mentioning pesto ingredients is enough to get the item onto the right shopping list. TechCrunch cites a similar case, with the feature assembling recipes and lists from a spoken request for shakshouka ingredients.

Availability and pricing tiers

The two outlets agree on the plan structure: Gmail Live is open to subscribers on Google AI Plus, Pro and Ultra tiers, while Docs Live and Keep Live are restricted to AI Pro and Ultra. They diverge on platforms, though. The Verge says Gmail Live and Docs Live run on both iOS and Android but Keep Live is Android-only for now, whereas TechCrunch states that all three features are available on both platforms. Google has told The Verge that Workspace business customers will get the features soon, a rollout TechCrunch also confirms is planned.

Part of a wider voice push

TechCrunch frames the launch as the latest step in a sustained voice effort. Google added cross-app dictation to its Mac app in April, shipped a Gemini-powered dictation tool called Rambler on Pixel 11 phones last month that strips filler words from speech, and introduced the Gemini 3.5 Transcribe model for speech-to-text work in August.

Why it matters

The launch signals Google's conviction that conversation, not the traditional app interface, is becoming a default way to interact with productivity software. Asking an inbox a question in plain language is faster than keyword search on a phone, and spoken capture lowers the friction of note-taking on the move. The tiering is just as notable: capabilities layered onto apps that hundreds of millions of people already use are gated behind Google's paid AI subscriptions, which could pull more users into those plans while free accounts go without. The permission model is the other open question — granting an assistant access to Gmail, Drive and Chat feeds yet more personal data into AI processing, making these features an implicit test of how much users trust Gemini with the contents of their working lives.
