Google Search adds live NFL game feed, deeper stats and fantasy roster insights

Google is leaning into the start of the NFL season with a batch of Search upgrades built around live games. The company announced a Live Game Feed that follows matchups in real time, a wider set of statistics, and a new link between Search and fantasy football accounts that lets its AI Mode hand out roster advice. The Verge covered the rollout as the regular season was getting underway, and Google published the details in a blog post the same day.

A live feed for games in progress

Search for a game that is currently being played on your phone and a red "Live" icon now opens the new feed. According to Google, it combines a recap of the game so far with a rolling timeline: play-by-play updates, highlighted social commentary, key video clips and AI-powered insights. The Verge describes the same package as a way to keep up with an ongoing game without leaving Search.

The feed covers professional football to start, on mobile and in English in the U.S., according to Google. The company says collegiate teams will be added later this month along with a push to bring the feed to more people around the world; The Verge frames the near-term expansion as college games plus additional languages.

A carousel for the rest of the league

Searching for a specific matchup also surfaces a new carousel that lets you flip through scores from other games happening at the same time, so a separate query for each one is no longer needed. Google says the carousel and the new statistics will be available to mobile users globally.

The stats themselves go deeper this season. Google is adding league leaderboards for categories such as passing touchdowns and rushing yards, plus more granular per-player metrics like sacks, fumbles and yards after catch. The company also lists championship favorites and playoff brackets as coming soon.

Fantasy lineups, connected

The most significant change is the fantasy integration. Ask AI Mode for help with your lineup and you will get the option to securely connect a Yahoo Fantasy or Sleeper account. Once linked, Google says Search can pull in context from your live rosters across all of your leagues and use it for start-or-sit calls, waiver-wire suggestions, an assessment of how your draft went, or a weekly recap of what is happening across the league.

The Verge highlights the removal of friction here: no screenshots to upload and no manual data entry, which had been the workaround for getting roster context into an AI tool. The fantasy connection is live now in the U.S. in English, and Google says it will keep tuning the feature over the course of the season, using thumbs-up and thumbs-down feedback on AI Mode responses as a signal.

Why it matters

The update is another step in Search's evolution from a list of links into an app-like surface. Live timelines, score carousels and AI summaries are designed to keep football fans inside Google instead of bouncing to ESPN, Yahoo or a dedicated league app, and live sports scores are a low-risk, high-volume place to prove that model at scale.

The account linking is the more consequential part. Google is now ingesting data from third-party services, in this case your actual fantasy rosters, to personalize AI answers rather than relying only on what a user types or what sits on the public web. It is convenient and clearly the pattern Google wants for AI Mode, but it also widens the amount of personal information flowing through Search. For Yahoo and Sleeper the arrangement cuts both ways: distribution inside the world's biggest search engine, while Google positions itself as the place where lineup decisions actually get made.
