The figure comes from a single post on dev.to's community feed, so it should be read as one author's account rather than an audited number. The argument built on top of it, however, is worth sitting with.
A small biped with nothing to hide
According to the dev.to post, the robot is a 25-centimeter bipedal machine built around fifteen actuators. Its sensor kit includes a camera, a speaker, LiDAR, NFC, Bluetooth and WiFi. The hardware design is fully open and documented, and the software side sits inside Hugging Face's LeRobot ecosystem, which is likewise open. The author notes that all of this shipped and sold without the industrial-scale funding that defines the humanoid segment, where, as the post points out, rounds on the order of $1.4 billion are the kind of bet being placed.
Why openness didn't kill the business
The reflexive assumption about open hardware is that publishing the design destroys the business, because anyone can copy it. The dev.to author treats Hugging Face's sales figure as a live counterexample: the plans are open, the software stack is open, and the product crossed a million dollars anyway.
The explanation offered is the same one that underpins commercial open-source software. Most buyers do not want to source fifteen actuators, fabricate a chassis and debug a sensor stack to save money on an affordable product that already exists. They want a finished thing that works out of the box, and they will pay the people who designed it. On this reading, openness functions as trust and ecosystem rather than as a giveaway. The path most builders can copy
The post draws a sharp line between two models of robotics company. Mega-funded humanoid firms are placing a bet that only a handful of players can place: billions of dollars, years of runway and factories. The Hugging Face robot represents the other path, the author argues, one that is small, open, well-documented and sold to a community that already trusts the maker.
That path is copyable in a way the capital-intensive one is not. For builders, it suggests that open hardware can carry a real business, that communities will pay for finished versions of things they could theoretically assemble themselves, and that the open-source playbook that worked for software may transfer to atoms as well as bits. For the wider AI hardware field, it is a reminder that the low end of the market can validate ideas faster and more cheaply than the top end, and that openness can be a commercial asset rather than a leak.
