Humanoid robots scale from demos to mass production, triggering strikes and import bans
Tesla, Hyundai and Chinese manufacturers pushed humanoid robots from trade-show demos to tens of thousands of units in 18 months, prompting the first recorded humanoid labor strike and US import bans.

Humanoid robotics moved from trade-show demonstrations to mass production between mid-2025 and mid-2026, according to a dev.to analysis. Tesla passed 50,000 cumulative Optimus units, China produced 40,000 humanoids in the first half of 2026 alone, and Hyundai committed to more than 25,000 Atlas robots across its plants. The same window brought the first recorded humanoid robot labor strike, US import bans and Chinese border deployments, leaving policy, labor and geopolitics scrambling to catch up with the hardware.
From demos to the production line
The cascade began in late 2025, when Chinese battery maker CATL announced what it called the first large-scale humanoid deployment on active EV battery production lines at its central China facility, claiming the robots matched skilled-worker performance. The dev.to report urges caution on that claim: independent assessments of Chinese deployments from this period found the robots still lacked precision and dexterity, mostly ran limited tasks in site-specific trials, and remained far from fully autonomous.
Boston Dynamics unveiled the commercial Atlas at CES on January 5, 2026, saying manufacturing had already begun and every 2026 unit was reserved. Within days, the robot was confirmed working at Hyundai's Ellabell, Georgia plant, which the report calls the first commercial humanoid on a major automotive production floor. Tesla followed on January 21 with Optimus Gen 3 mass production; by April 16 its China president confirmed more than 1,000 Gen 3 units across Tesla facilities, and by July 18 cumulative Optimus output had passed 50,000. Figure AI separately crossed 10,000 deployments across partner warehouses.
China's side of the ledger ran in parallel. Four AGIBOT G2 robots completed a live-streamed eight-hour shift on a precision tablet assembly line in Nanchang in April, with operator Longcheer planning expansion to 100 units by Q3 2026. By July 19, China had produced 40,000 humanoids in the first half of 2026, matching its entire 2025 output in six months, and accounted for more than half of all humanoid robot models globally, according to China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. A Chinese model, the U1, also reached market billed by its developers as the world's first mass-produced humanoid.
Hyundai's bet and the first labor strike
Hyundai announced the largest single commitment in May 2026: more than 25,000 Atlas robots across Hyundai and Kia plants before any external sales, with a US Hyundai Mobis facility targeting 350,000 actuators annually by 2028. The vertical integration is the point. Boston Dynamics is a Hyundai subsidiary, Hyundai Mobis builds the actuators, and Hyundai plants are the primary customer, giving the group cost and iteration advantages that pure-play robotics firms cannot easily match. It mirrors Tesla's approach of deploying Optimus inside its own factories first.
The deployment also frames what the report describes as the first humanoid robot labor strike, recorded around the July 18 Hyundai deployment news, though the available details are limited. Organized labor's response to humanoids at industrial scale had been modeled in theory; the report treats it as now a documented reality rather than a scenario.
Geopolitics enters the factory
On December 27, 2025, China deployed UBTECH Walker S2 humanoids at the Fanggengchang border crossing in Guangxi, near Vietnam, for 24-hour inspection, patrol and logistics work, one of the first operational uses of humanoids in border security. It arrived before most Western manufacturers had shipped a single commercial unit.
The US response came on July 28, 2026. The FCC banned humanoid robots and connected power inverters from China, citing potential surveillance of Americans and remote commandeering of robots; the ban applies to models not yet approved, though the FCC can revoke existing authorizations. A broader administration import ban covered humanoid and quadruped robots manufactured outside the United States on national security grounds. The report notes an immediate side effect: US manufacturers sourcing components from Chinese suppliers, which dominate key subsystems such as actuators and sensors, now face a supply problem. One day before the US actions, China's regulators launched a program to move humanoid robots from testing into real-world factory operation at the 10,000-unit scale by the end of 2026, a timeline now running directly against the US restrictions.
The AI layer
Hardware scale without software capability would plateau quickly. On July 30 and 31, Google DeepMind released Gemini Robotics 2, a model enabling whole-body humanoid control, advanced dexterity and multi-robot collaboration, demonstrated on Apptronik's Apollo 2 robot. Whole-body control has historically confined humanoids to narrow, pre-programmed tasks. A frontier model handling locomotion and manipulation together means the same hardware can be retasked across production environments without custom programming for each station, which changes the economics of every deployment mentioned above.
Why it matters
The industry went from thousands of units to tens of thousands in roughly two quarters, faster than most analysts predicted. That turns humanoid labor from a conference demo topic into an industrial and political variable. The first labor strike, the US import bans and Chinese border deployments all landed within the same period, showing institutions reacting in real time rather than planning ahead. With China producing more than half of the world's humanoid models while the US restricts imports, the pressure point is shifting from finished robots to the actuator and sensor supply chains underneath them, and the competitive dynamics now in motion are more likely to compound than settle over the next 18 months.
