Isar Aerospace reaches orbit and deploys satellites, a first for a European commercial launcher
Isar Aerospace's Spectrum rocket reached orbit and deployed payloads on only its second flight, a first for a European commercial launch company.

Isar Aerospace has become the first commercial space company from Europe to put satellites into orbit, the German launch provider announced on 5 September 2026. The milestone came on only the company's second flight, with its Spectrum rocket lifting off from a dedicated pad at Andøya Space in Norway at 10:12 pm CEST.
The mission, called "Onward and Upward", deployed its payloads in orbit. According to Isar Aerospace, the company is now working with its customers to confirm the status of the satellites.
A clean flight to orbit
Isar Aerospace reports that the qualification flight passed each milestone in order: the vehicle survived maximum dynamic pressure, shut down its first-stage engines, separated its stages and ignited the second stage as planned. Spectrum then crossed the Kármán line at 100 kilometres altitude, jettisoned its payload fairing, completed a circularization burn and released its spacecraft.
The payloads were selected through the Microlauncher Competition run by the German Space Agency at DLR, a programme that gives educational institutions and start-ups low-cost access to orbit and is funded through ESA Boost!.
CEO and co-founder Daniel Metzler framed the flight as giving continental Europe its own route to orbit. He argued that launch remains the biggest bottleneck in the global space industry and that commercial and institutional customers now have a genuine alternative. He also said the company accomplished in a few years what had previously taken the European space sector decades, and that Europe can now reach orbit under its own control.
Building rockets at industrial scale
According to the announcement, Spectrum vehicles three through seven are already in production. The company is nearing completion of what it describes as Europe's largest integrated factory for launch vehicles, a 40,000 square-metre facility that should eventually support output of up to 40 rockets per year. Production relies on a vertically integrated manufacturing model with a high degree of automation, an approach the company treats as central to scaling launch capacity rather than building one-off vehicles.
Geographically, Isar Aerospace is expanding beyond Norway. It is constructing a launch complex in Nova Scotia, Canada, intended to serve mid- to high-inclination orbits that matter for Earth observation and communications satellites.
The company, founded in 2018 and headquartered near Munich, now employs more than 400 people across five international locations and is backed by private international investors.
Why it matters
The claim of being the first European commercial company to reach orbit is Isar Aerospace's own framing, and with satellite status still being confirmed, some mission details await verification. Even so, a startup founded in 2018 reaching orbit and deploying payloads on its second flight is fast by any measure, and the flight profile itself — nominal performance from MaxQ all the way through spacecraft separation — is exactly what prospective customers need to see before committing payloads to a rocket.
The bigger signal is capacity. If launch availability really is the constraint on the space economy that Metzler describes, then a new European supplier with rockets already in serial production and a factory sized for dozens of launches per year adds meaningful competition. For the universities and start-ups flying under DLR's Microlauncher Competition, it points to cheaper and more frequent access to orbit. For European institutions and constellation operators, it offers a launch option based on the continent — and, before long, a second one on Canadian soil.
