A converted Cessna flew itself across the US
Joby Aviation said Friday that an aircraft equipped with its autonomy technology flew more than 3,100 miles across the United States without a human pilot taking control at any point, according to TechCrunch. The company is describing the trip as the first autonomous flight across the country.
The aircraft was a converted Cessna Caravan, not one of Joby's own eVTOL designs. Every phase of the operation — taxiing, takeoff, navigation and landing — was handled autonomously, the company said. The flight was supervised remotely from Joby's headquarters in California and from Shaw Air Force Base in South Carolina, and a pilot rode along only to satisfy compliance requirements.
The journey is not over yet, either. Per TechCrunch, the aircraft will work its way back to the West Coast over the next two weeks, with stops planned in cities including Louisville, Kentucky, and Salt Lake City.
Autonomy built to be retrofitted
The significance lies less in the route itself than in what it demonstrates about the generality of Joby's autonomy stack. The software is designed to be retrofitted onto a wide range of conventional aircraft, so a transcontinental trip through varied conditions serves as evidence that the system can handle different environments and mission types — medical transport, disaster response and defense logistics among them.
That adaptability is the foundation of what could become a second business for a company best known for its electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft, which Joby has spent years pushing through FAA type certification for short urban passenger trips.
According to TechCrunch, Joby intends to bring a regional airframe fitted with the autonomy stack to market first, targeting defense missions as well as commercial freight. The effort is supported by a $17 million Air Force contract with AFWERX.
Deeper military ties
The cross-country flight fits into a broader defense expansion. Joby has a long-running relationship with the US Department of Defense and has been moving further into the military sector.
In August, the company acquired Resonant Sciences, an Ohio-based maker of radio frequency and sensor systems, in a deal worth $500 million in cash and stock. Resonant now sits inside a dedicated defense business within Joby that also includes work on turbine-electric and hydrogen-electric aircraft alongside the autonomy technology stack.
Joby additionally signed an agreement last year with defense contractor L3Harris Technologies to explore a new class of aircraft — a gas-turbine hybrid vertical take-off and landing vehicle capable of flying autonomously — aimed at defense applications.
Why it matters
Autonomous flight programs are typically demonstrated through short, tightly controlled hops. A 3,100-mile crossing of routine US airspace, with a human aboard purely as a compliance measure, is a different order of demonstration. It suggests the software can operate over long distances and through varied airspace without intervention, which is the bar any autonomy product must clear before it can be trusted with real logistics work.
The timing also matters for Joby itself. Its air taxi business remains tied to a lengthy certification process, so proving an autonomy product that bolts onto existing conventional aircraft opens a path to revenue in defense and freight that does not depend on that timeline. With the Resonant acquisition, the AFWERX contract and the L3Harris partnership all stacking up, the flight reads less like a one-off stunt and more like the public proof point for a defense business the company has been steadily assembling.
