Leaked DLSS 5 code from NBA 2K27 build lets modders bring Nvidia's neural rendering to older games
Code for Nvidia's unreleased DLSS 5 surfaced in an NBA 2K27 early-access build, and modders have already ported its neural rendering effects to Control, Skyrim, GTA V and other games.

An unreleased piece of Nvidia's DLSS 5 technology has escaped into the wild through an unlikely route: an early-access build of NBA 2K27. According to The Verge, modders found code for the AI upscaling tech inside the basketball game's build and quickly stripped it out, wiring it into a growing list of titles.
How the leak spread
Members of the RenoDX modding channel on Discord were reportedly the first to extract the DLSS "Neural Rendering" file, getting it running in Remedy's Control before anything else — a discovery earlier reported by Notebook Check and VideoCardz. From there the technique spread to Skyrim, Cyberpunk 2077, GTA V, GTA: San Andreas, Palworld and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, with clips of the results circulating widely.
What the mod actually does
The most striking demonstrations involve faces. In one video described by The Verge, adjusting the mod's settings changes how defined Control protagonist Jesse Faden looks: with the "Neural Uplift" option switched off, her face appears smooth and uniform, while enabling it makes her skin paler, her laugh lines more visible, and adds what looks like smeared makeup beneath her eyes.
In GTA: San Andreas, the tech behaves almost like a visual filter, sharpening CJ's face and the city's textures, deepening shadows on his face and the surrounding environment, and shifting the lighting from warm to cool tones as a slider moves. A Palworld clip shows the game's cartoonish characters gaining definition, with shadow intensity changing alongside. The Verge notes that plenty of other videos are already floating around, and more are likely on the way.
The performance bill is steep
None of this comes free. One person testing the mod on Final Fantasy VII Rebirth says it "halves" their frame rate and that "swapping between presets eats a TON of vram." In a GTA V demonstration, frame rates drop from 90 to 29 FPS as the sliders are adjusted. The unofficial DLSS 5 build initially ran on RTX 50-series GPUs, but VideoCardz reports that modders have since gotten it working on RTX 4090 and RTX 4080 cards as well.
Divided reactions
The response has tracked the debate that has followed DLSS 5 since its announcement. Some players welcome the visual improvements, while others dismiss the results as "AI slop" that resembles an "AI-enhanced" filter applied to images.
Nvidia first announced DLSS 5 in March, positioning it as a way to bring "photoreal lighting and materials" to game graphics in real time. Demos running on Resident Evil Requiem, Starfield and Hogwarts Legacy drew immediate backlash, with many players complaining that characters looked "yassified" or generic. Others raised concerns that the technology could override a developer's vision for their characters — a criticism Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang rejected by saying the tool "doesn't change the artistic control." The official DLSS 5 launch is scheduled for this fall.
Why it matters
The leak offers an unsanctioned preview of a technology Nvidia has been staging carefully for a fall launch, and it lands in the middle of an unresolved argument about AI's role in game visuals. When a filter can restyle a character's face or a game's lighting, questions about who controls the final look of a game — the developer, the player, or the model — stop being theoretical and become visible in side-by-side slider comparisons.
The performance cost documented by modders, roughly half the frame rate plus heavy VRAM use, also gives players an early, unfiltered read on how demanding the tech is, something marketing demos rarely show. And the episode is a reminder that early-access builds remain a soft spot for unreleased software: a single sports title shipped with code Nvidia had not yet published. For Nvidia, the awkward part is that DLSS 5's first mass exposure is now being shaped by presets tweaked in a Discord channel rather than by curated demonstrations — just months before the real thing arrives.
