A refinement release fused to a mandatory AI overhaul
Ars Technica's review of macOS 27 Golden Gate, highlighted on the Hacker News front page, paints the release as two updates stitched into one. Underneath the marketing, it is the kind of quiet, polish-heavy release that Mac users traditionally label a "Snow Leopard": fixes for the most irritating interface decisions carried over from macOS 26 Tahoe, a long list of small improvements, and under-the-hood optimization meant to make routine tasks feel faster and more dependable.
On top of that sits the real story. Golden Gate delivers the first substantial upgrade to Apple Intelligence in the two years since the suite launched, together with the redesigned Siri that Apple has repeatedly hinted at across the last two releases without ever committing to a ship date.
The most striking change is that generative AI is no longer optional. According to Ars Technica, the setting that previously let users disable Apple Intelligence and erase the multi-gigabyte model files from disk has been removed. AI now defines the release — its features, its marketing, its chip requirements, and its storage footprint — whether individual users want it or not.
Intel support ends after six years of Apple Silicon
Golden Gate is the first macOS version since the mid-2000s to run on no Intel Macs at all. Apple has cut the last handful of 2019- and 2020-era Intel machines that could officially run macOS 26 Tahoe. The new floor is an M1 chip, which covers the 2020 M1 MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, and Mac mini or newer; the 2021 iMac or newer; the 2023 Mac Pro; every Mac Studio; and the 2026 MacBook Neo.
The review was tested across the lower end of that range — an M1 MacBook Air with 16GB of RAM and 1TB of storage, a 15-inch M3 MacBook Air with 24GB and 512GB, and a MacBook Neo with 8GB and 512GB — and concludes that any Apple Silicon Mac in decent condition should handle the release comfortably. One side effect of the cutoff: every Mac that can install Golden Gate can now run Apple Intelligence, which never worked on Intel hardware.
Apple Intelligence splits into two tiers
Golden Gate also introduces a divide within the supported Mac population. The standard experience runs on a new AFM 3 Core model that, per Ars Technica, was developed with Google's involvement. A step above sits AFM 3 Core Advanced, which Apple positions as its most capable on-device model and which requires an M3-family chip or newer plus at least 12GB of RAM.
That RAM figure is peculiar because no Apple Silicon Mac has shipped with exactly 12GB of memory, and the reviewer speculates it may foreshadow a MacBook Neo with an A19 Pro and 12GB of RAM arriving during Golden Gate's lifespan. As things stand, M1 and M2 owners with 16GB or more remain excluded from the Advanced model, as do 8GB M3 machines, while every M4, M5, and M6 Mac qualifies. Only two features currently demand the bigger model — more expressive Siri voices and improved dictation — but the review expects the capability gap between older and newer Macs to widen as Apple keeps building on the platform.
The shrinking list of options for dropped Macs
For Intel owners, Ars Technica lays out a narrowing roadmap. Macs that officially run macOS 15 Sequoia or macOS 26 Tahoe can stay put, with security and Safari updates expected to continue until autumn 2027 and 2028 respectively, assuming Apple follows its usual pattern — though the review cautions that not every flaw patched in the newest release gets backported to older ones.
Anything older, stuck at macOS 14 Sonoma or before, is left with browser lifelines: Chrome reaches back to macOS 13 Ventura and Firefox to 10.15 Catalina. The OpenCore Legacy Patcher project, which once shoehorned newer macOS onto old hardware, has stalled as Apple stripped out Intel-native code; its final official update landed nearly a year ago and it never supported Tahoe or the Apple T2 chip. Boot Camp Windows 10 installations still function but their security updates are drying up, while Linux runs well mainly on 2017-and-older machines, with T2 coprocessor support remaining hit-or-miss outside specialist distributions such as CachyOS. The reviewer's bottom line: with memory and storage prices inflated by the ongoing supply crunch, anyone whose Mac falls below the Sequoia threshold should be seriously planning a hardware upgrade.
Why it matters
The removal of the opt-out marks a genuine policy shift: Apple has decided AI is infrastructure rather than a feature users decline, disk cost and all. Ending Intel support closes the book on the platform's transition era and sets a hard compatibility floor for the next decade of Macs. Meanwhile, the tiered model requirements — tied to chip generation and RAM allotment rather than raw performance — fragment the lineup in a new way, where AI capability now determines which software features a given machine receives. For IT planners, the 2027 and 2028 update deadlines for Sequoia and Tahoe are the dates to build refresh cycles around.
