A journal that looks like a pet

Meta has quietly launched Waddle World, an app featuring Tamagotchi-like virtual pets that chat with their owners and draw doodles to illustrate the conversation, according to The Verge. Although the App Store and Google Play listings describe it as a retro 16-bit pet-care game, the pitch is odder than that: the listings position the app as a daily journal that simply takes the form of a pet.

Users are encouraged to talk to their pets rather than type at them, and to unwind with low-stakes mini-games such as grocery-stacking challenges and word puzzles. The Google Play listing, as quoted by The Verge, presents the app as a calm corner of the day, where a pixelated companion learns about its owner over time and there are no streaks, no scores and nothing to lose.

A quiet, limited launch

The app was spotted by social media consultant Matt Navarra. It is listed as free and, per its store listings, is available only to adult users in the Philippines — another example of Meta testing consumer AI products in small markets without fanfare.

It is not the only one. The Verge also reports that Meta quietly shipped an AI fashion app called Style Sketch, which Navarra says is restricted to Indonesia, Singapore and Thailand. The Verge notes that it could not verify those location restrictions itself. There is no indication yet of whether either app will reach the United States or other markets, and The Verge says it has contacted Meta for details.

Cuteness as a product direction

Waddle World's cozy pixel aesthetic is not an isolated choice. As The Verge points out, Meta is currently promoting an overwhelmingly cute mascot alongside small Charm gadgets built around its Muse AI agent. The pet app fits that trajectory: an AI companion designed to feel warm and undemanding rather than task-oriented.

Why it matters

The launch is another signal of how Meta is approaching consumer AI. Rather than funnelling every idea into a single flagship assistant, the company appears to be running a spread of small, personality-led experiments in limited markets and watching what sticks. Waddle World is the most telling of the pair, because it targets companionship and journaling — use cases built on daily habits and a continuing relationship with an AI character, rather than one-off queries. That is a different proposition from a conventional chatbot. The soft-launch approach also lets Meta iterate without the scrutiny that comes with a headline release. Whether Waddle World and Style Sketch ever expand beyond Asia is unknown, but the experiments themselves suggest where Meta thinks consumer AI hooks may be found: not just in assistant windows, but in characters people want to visit every day.
