Microsoft launches Nvidia RTX Spark Surface PCs starting at $2,600 with agent-focused Windows 11

Microsoft has priced its Nvidia RTX Spark machines from $2,600, alongside a $6,000 Dev Box, and shipped a Windows 11 revamp that brings agent sandboxing to all users.

Microsoft has detailed its first PCs built around Nvidia's RTX Spark chip, announcing a new Surface laptop and a developer workstation that pair AI-focused hardware with a reworked version of Windows 11 designed for running AI agents. According to TechCrunch, the company revealed the machines at an event in San Francisco on Wednesday, held during the city's Tech Week.

The launch follows Nvidia's June announcement that it had secured agreements with Microsoft and a range of other PC makers to produce AI- and agent-ready Windows machines based on RTX Spark, although specifics were thin at the time.

The hardware

The centerpiece is the Surface Laptop Ultra, which arrives in two base configurations. According to TechCrunch, one starts at $2,600 and a second, equipped with a more powerful chip, starts at $3,700. Options for additional memory and storage push the price as high as $5,900, and Microsoft said the top-tier configuration has already run out of stock.

Alongside the laptop, Microsoft introduced the Surface RTX Spark Dev Box, a workstation priced from $6,000 that ships with the company's development tooling, including VS Code, GitHub Copilot CLI, WSL and PowerShell 7.

Both systems are pitched as machines for running AI models locally on the device, an approach Microsoft frames as free of cloud inference costs. To support that, the hardware pairs the CPU and GPU with unified memory and other changes such as enhanced cooling to sustain demanding model workloads.

A Windows 11 built for agents

The devices run a revamped build of Windows 11 whose headline addition is a feature called Execution Containers, which Microsoft says makes it easier to sandbox AI agents. CEO Satya Nadella said at the event that the feature will be made available to all Windows 11 users, not just buyers of the new hardware.

Nadella argued that a model on its own achieves little. "You really do need to orchestrate, and you need to have memory outside of the model," he said, describing a harness layer that combines multiple models with context, memory and an action space. Microsoft is building this "not just for our apps but apps for anyone's agent," he added, framing that as the point of the Windows platform going forward.

Courting developers and Mac switchers

The machines are squarely aimed at developers, so much so that Microsoft is offering up to $1,000 off to customers trading in a MacBook Pro. TechCrunch notes that Macs have become a popular choice among developers and AI agent enthusiasts, particularly in Silicon Valley. Microsoft also says the graphics capability in the new Surface machines extends to content creation, video processing and gaming.

Microsoft was not the only PC maker to fill in the details this week. Dell simultaneously announced specifications for its previously revealed XPS 16 Creator Edition, which is available for pre-order at Best Buy for $3,800 with delivery later in October, according to TechCrunch.

Why it matters

The launch delivers the first concrete details of the machines Nvidia promised in June, when it lined up Microsoft and other PC makers around RTX Spark. With Dell detailing its own RTX Spark system the same day, the category is arriving as a coordinated Windows ecosystem push rather than a single vendor's experiment, and pricing from $2,600 to $6,000 places these systems firmly in the professional and enthusiast tier.

The software side may matter more over time. By bringing Execution Containers to every Windows 11 user, Microsoft is turning agent sandboxing into a platform-level feature rather than a perk tied to new hardware, backing Nadella's ambition for Windows to act as the orchestration layer for third-party agents. The generous MacBook Pro trade-in credit, meanwhile, is a clear signal that Microsoft sees developers on Apple's platform as the customers it needs to win over.
