Microsoft sets October 7th Windows and Surface event with Nvidia's CEO attending

Microsoft has announced a Windows and Surface event for October 7th in San Francisco, its first major event dedicated to the operating system and its PC hardware in more than two years. According to The Verge, Microsoft is describing the gathering as a conversation about how "local AI will shape the next chapter of the PC."

The company has not held a headline Windows event since May 2024, when it unveiled Arm-based Copilot Plus PCs alongside a renewed partnership with Qualcomm. The one before that came in June 2021, when Windows 11 was announced during a live stream. That makes October 7th the first comprehensive public statement of direction for Windows and Surface since the AI PC push began.

An unusual guest list

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella will attend, along with Pavan Davuluri, the executive who leads Windows and Surface. The most notable name on the list, though, is Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang. As The Verge points out, Huang's appearance suggests that RTX Spark PCs could be the focus of the show. If that is the case, The Verge expects Microsoft to use the event to share pricing and availability details for the Surface Laptop Ultra.

Windows quality, not a successor

Tom Warren, The Verge's senior correspondent who has covered Microsoft for more than two decades, says he expects the company to focus on the quality improvements it has made to Windows and to outline what is coming next for the platform. He is not expecting a surprise announcement of Windows 12 at the event.

Why it matters

A gap of more than two years between major Windows events means this one carries an unusual amount of the roadmap. Several threads make it worth watching:

• The framing around local AI puts on-device intelligence at the center of the PC's next phase, and the event should show how Microsoft intends to deliver that in shipping products rather than concepts.
• Nvidia's CEO sharing the stage with Microsoft's leadership hints at a broadening of the AI PC story beyond the Qualcomm Arm partnership that anchored the 2024 event, which would be significant for chip suppliers and PC makers alike.
