Microsoft to disclose quarterly Azure revenue in two-segment reporting overhaul

Microsoft will collapse its three reporting segments into two and disclose Azure's quarterly revenue for the first time, with the changes taking effect at its late-October earnings.

Microsoft to disclose quarterly Azure revenue in two-segment reporting overhaul

Microsoft is restructuring the way it reports results to investors, cutting its reporting segments from three to two and committing to quarterly revenue disclosure for Azure, according to The Verge. The changes take effect with the company's first-quarter fiscal 2027 earnings, scheduled for late October.

From three segments to two

Microsoft's results have long been split across Productivity and Business Processes, Intelligent Cloud, and More Personal Computing. That trio is being replaced by two units: Agents and Infra, and Devices and Consumer.

Devices and Consumer groups the consumer-facing parts of the business. According to The Verge, it will absorb revenue from LinkedIn and search advertising, the Xbox division, and Windows OEM and devices.

Agents and Infra is effectively everything else, and therefore the bulk of the company. It covers Azure, Microsoft 365 Cloud, Microsoft 365 in both its commercial and consumer forms, server products, industry solutions, and the enterprise and partner services that Microsoft is renaming frontier and support services.

Azure revenue, every quarter

The most consequential change is disclosure. Until now Microsoft has typically shared only year-over-year growth rates for Azure; The Verge notes the company published Azure revenue for the first time last year, but not on a quarterly cadence. From late October, an Azure revenue figure will appear in every earnings report.

The definition of Azure is narrowing at the same time. GitHub cloud and other developer cloud services will sit outside the figure, as will Security Copilot and the Healthcare and Life Sciences cloud businesses.

"Under this reporting structure, Azure becomes more purely our consumption-based platform and infrastructure business," Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said in remarks reported by The Verge. He added that each segment will provide "full transparency of quarterly revenue across each of our key businesses, including Azure, M365 Cloud, industry solutions, and ads."

AI is the stated driver

Nadella tied the restructuring directly to AI. "There's no question AI represents a profound shift in both technology and business," he said. "It is changing what we build and how we operate, and it is blurring the boundaries between our products and reshaping our business models."

That framing explains the reshuffle. If AI is dissolving the lines between Microsoft's products, reporting buckets drawn up years ago no longer describe how the company actually operates. Even the new segment names point in that direction: one pairs AI agents with infrastructure, while the other collects devices and consumer services on the side of the business furthest from the datacenter.

Why it matters

Azure is the clearest lens investors have on Microsoft's enormous AI bet, and until now they have had to read it through growth percentages rather than absolute revenue. Quarterly disclosure changes that, providing a direct, recurring measure of the consumption-based platform at the center of the company's AI strategy.

The narrower definition cuts both ways. It makes Azure easier to read as a pure infrastructure and consumption business, but it also means the newly disclosed numbers will not map cleanly onto how Azure has been characterized in the past, since GitHub, developer cloud services, Security Copilot and the health-sector clouds are all excluded from the new figure.

The resegmentation is also a signal in its own right. A company of Microsoft's size recasting its reporting around agents and infrastructure is a formal acknowledgment that AI has moved from a feature it bolts onto products to the organizing principle of how it runs and presents the business. The first test arrives in late October, when the fiscal 2027 first-quarter report shows whether the new structure, and the new Azure number, change the conversation around Microsoft's AI spending and its returns.
