Mistral raises €3 billion Series D led by Samsung at €21 billion-plus valuation

Mistral has closed a €3 billion Series D at a post-money valuation above €21 billion, a round the company calls the largest equity raise ever completed by a European tech firm.

Mistral raises €3 billion Series D led by Samsung at €21 billion-plus valuation

The round

Mistral has raised €3 billion in Series D funding at a post-money valuation of more than €21 billion, according to the company's announcement, which appeared on the Hacker News front page on 8 September 2026. The company describes the round as the biggest equity raise any European technology firm has ever completed — a claim that comes from Mistral itself rather than an independent tally. The financing lands three years after the company first launched.

Samsung Electronics led the investment, with the Scaleup Europe Fund, managed by EQT, and existing shareholder PSG Equity joining as co-leads.

Where the money goes

According to the announcement, the capital will expand Mistral's frontier research, scale the compute capacity used to train larger models, and extend the company's infrastructure, commercial operations and international footprint. Mistral says it already operates in 20 countries and serves more than 125 large enterprises, with Airbus, ASML and HSBC named among its customers.

The sovereignty pitch

The strategic framing in the announcement is a shift in what AI buyers are asking for. In generative AI's first phase, the defining contest was who could build the most capable model. Now, Mistral argues, enterprises and governments want to know how to deploy powerful AI on critical workloads while keeping control of their infrastructure and the full pipeline from data to outputs.

Mistral positions itself as the only AI company building the entire stack it believes that requires: open-weight models, the compute and infrastructure they run on, and the products that carry them into production. The stated benefit is twofold — organisations can build on the stack without exposing sensitive data, workflows or institutional knowledge to outsiders, and without tying themselves to a single vendor's release schedule or commercial terms.

The company defines what it calls its sovereign AI layer along four axes: data that stays inside an organisation's boundaries, models that can be controlled and customised, private and predictable compute, and production systems that are fully controllable and auditable.

The investor syndicate

The round combines strategic and financial backers from Europe, Asia and North America, a spread Mistral reads as a broad endorsement of its approach. Samsung leading the Series D follows ASML leading the Series C, giving the company backing from two heavyweights in advanced manufacturing and engineering — the kind of businesses, Mistral notes, that need to run state-of-the-art AI inside complex real-world environments.

New investors include Advent, funds and accounts managed by BlackRock, and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. A long roster of existing shareholders also participated, among them a16z, ASML, Bpifrance, BNP Paribas CIB, DST Global, General Catalyst, Index Ventures, Lightspeed, NVIDIA and Salesforce Ventures.

Why it matters

If the record claim holds, the round is a milestone for European tech finance. Frontier AI development has so far been funded chiefly through enormous US rounds, and a €3 billion equity raise by a European company signals that European and Asian capital can now underwrite frontier-scale model training.

The bet behind the money matters as much as the amount. Mistral is wagering that sovereignty — open weights, controllable infrastructure, auditable deployment — becomes a primary buying criterion for governments and large enterprises rather than a compliance afterthought. Its open-weight approach is a direct challenge to the closed-model strategy of the leading US labs, offering performance paired with independence instead of performance tied to a single provider.

There are caveats. Every figure and superlative in this story comes from Mistral's own announcement rather than independent reporting, and frontier training requires enormous, ongoing compute budgets — €3 billion helps, but the competitive bar keeps rising. Even so, the round confirms that the question of who controls frontier AI, not merely who builds it, has become a market force in its own right.
