The foundry's purpose, confirmed

Elon Musk has confirmed what a secretive SpaceX facility in Bastrop, Texas is for: a foundry to cast gas turbine blades and vanes in-house, targeting one of the hardest-to-manufacture components in the energy supply chain and, by extension, one of AI's most pressing bottlenecks.

According to TechCrunch, the confirmation came in response to a report published earlier the same day by The Information, which cited SpaceX job listings that explicitly mention a "blades and vanes foundry." The Information also drew on findings by Corey Trinetti, a due diligence specialist who documents AI infrastructure sites in his newsletter and who reported that SpaceX bought roughly 830 acres near its existing Starlink factory in Bastrop between March and June.

In a post on X, Musk said SpaceX and Tesla are each building 100 gigawatts per year of solar production capacity, but that natural gas will still be needed to supplement and bootstrap solar for several years. Casting blades and vanes at SpaceX, he claimed, could accelerate gas turbines coming online by up to 18 months.

Power is the new chip shortage

The backdrop, as TechCrunch lays out, is a second constraint layered on top of the familiar GPU shortage: electricity itself. Nvidia's Blackwell chips still carry lead times of several months, but the International Energy Agency projects that global data center electricity use will roughly double by 2030, and turbine maker GE Vernova says it is essentially sold out of production capacity through 2030, largely because of AI infrastructure demand. That has pushed hyperscalers including Amazon, Google, Meta, OpenAI and Microsoft toward building private gas-fired plants next to their data centers rather than waiting on the grid.

The specific choke point SpaceX is attacking is casting. According to The Information, blades in a gas turbine's hottest section operate at roughly 3,000 to 3,600 degrees Fahrenheit, about 800 degrees hotter than the melting point of the alloy they are made from. They survive only thanks to internal cooling channels, thermal-barrier coatings and a highly specific casting process. Just four companies worldwide have mastered that process at industrial scale, and all of them are currently tapped out. Each blade must be grown as a single, unbroken crystal inside a vacuum furnace, without the microscopic seams that make ordinary cast metal crack under stress — difficult even for the smaller blades used in jet engines, and considerably harder at power-plant scale.

A manufacturing moat, if it works

TechCrunch points to the strategic stakes: if SpaceX succeeds, a Musk-controlled entity would hold a manufacturing capability that every other AI infrastructure builder currently sources from a tiny oligopoly — an edge that well-funded but non-manufacturing competitors cannot copy quickly. The caveat, as the report notes, is that success is easier said than done.

The pollution bill comes due

Faster turbines also mean emissions arrive sooner. In Memphis, where SpaceXAI has run gas turbines to power its Colossus data centers since 2024, the NAACP has repeatedly accused the company of operating turbines without the permits and pollution controls required by federal law, citing smog-forming compounds and hazardous chemicals such as formaldehyde, which are linked to asthma, respiratory disease and certain cancers. University of Memphis researchers said in an admittedly limited analysis that air pollution grew "slightly worse" because of the data center, which sits near neighborhoods already burdened by heavy industrial pollution.

TechCrunch argues Memphis is simply the most visible case. In Virginia's Data Center Alley, a study commissioned by the Piedmont Environmental Council using the EPA's own COBRA health-impact model estimated that emissions from a single facility's eight full-time gas turbines could reach more than 2.5 million people across multiple counties — with the heaviest impact falling on already-marginalized communities — and cause an estimated 3.4 to 6.5 additional premature deaths per year, translating to $53 million to $99 million in annual health-related damages.

Why it matters

The AI buildout is no longer constrained only by chips; it is constrained by the physical ability to generate electricity, to the point where a rocket company is entering one of metallurgy's hardest niches to shave months off turbine deliveries. If SpaceX pulls this off, vertical integration becomes a moat that capital alone cannot buy. But the same acceleration multiplies the local health and legal friction that gas turbines already attract, and that opposition could itself become the next bottleneck. Whether in-house casting works at industrial scale is unproven; the demand that drove the attempt is not.
