Nothing CEO says company's first AI-native device ships in December
Nothing CEO Carl Pei says the company's first AI-native product ships in December, describing it as a screenless productivity tool that "couldn't have been an app."

Nothing's first AI-native device arrives in December
Nothing, the smartphone startup behind the distinctive Nothing Phone, will ship its first "AI-native product" in December, CEO Carl Pei said in a post on X on Wednesday. According to TechCrunch, the company is staying quiet on almost every detail of what the device actually is.
Pei did rule out two things. The product has no new screen, and "it couldn't have been an app," he wrote. He described it as a productivity tool built with "the personality and care that have come to define a Nothing product."
That leaves a puzzle: a screenless, non-app product that uses AI and is meant for getting things done. As TechCrunch notes, the description also downplays any link to AI wearables, a connection Pei has been careful to avoid claiming.
A different read on the AI device moment
Pei has teased an AI-first device for some time, and his latest framing suggests he sees the current wave of AI hardware as misguided. In his post, he took direct aim at the industry's search for a breakout gadget.
"The whole industry is hunting for its iPhone moment: the pendant, the pin, the glasses, the companion, some magical consumer device that makes AI part of everyone's life," Pei wrote. "I admire the boldness, but I read this moment differently."
He did not explain what that different reading is, and no firm release date has been announced beyond the December window, according to TechCrunch.
Part of a wider AI hardware push
The mystery product is not Nothing's only AI effort. TechCrunch reports that the company has also said it plans to release a pair of AI-linked smart glasses, along with earbuds that carry AI integrations. Wednesday's post, with its pointed references to pendants and glasses, suggests the December device is a separate proposition from those planned wearables.
For a company that has built its identity around distinctive industrial design, a screenless AI device would be a notable departure — or, depending on execution, a natural extension of its minimal, hardware-first approach.
Why it matters
The AI hardware market is crowded with attempts to find a form factor that sticks — precisely the pendants, pins and glasses Pei alludes to — and few entrants bring a hardware brand as recognizable as Nothing's. A startup that already sells phones and audio gear has an existing customer base and design credibility that many AI-first gadgets have lacked.
The constraint is also the intrigue. By ruling out both a screen and an app, Pei has narrowed the design space to something genuinely unfamiliar: either Nothing has found a use case that justifies new hardware, or it is about to add one more device to the pile chasing AI's iPhone moment. With a December shipping window, the answer should arrive within weeks.
