Nvidia walks back a narrow rollout

Nvidia is expanding the official footprint of DLSS 5, its AI rendering technology, to include previous-generation RTX 40-series graphics cards. According to The Verge, Nvidia spokesperson Rajal Maharaj confirmed the change, which arrives after modders had already spread a leaked build of DLSS 5 across hardware Nvidia never intended to support.

DLSS 5 was originally slated for a narrow debut: a single game, RTX 50-series GPUs only, and developers in full control of the artistic result. Modders broke that plan open by porting a leaked version to run on a wide range of cards with every setting pushed to maximum.

One generation at a time

The rollout order has not changed at the top. DLSS 5 still launches first on RTX 50 hardware, and Nvidia told The Verge that its near-term priority is performance tuning there, with model updates expected later this fall. Once that work is done, official RTX 40-series support will follow.

Owners of even older cards have less reason for optimism. Modders also targeted RTX 30 and RTX 20-series GPUs, though The Verge describes those results as crash-prone and far from playable. Asked about those generations, Maharaj said the focus remains the 50-series, adding "one step at a time."

Players get a toggle, developers get the dials

Anyone hoping the modding scene's free-for-all would translate into official user control will be disappointed. Nvidia told The Verge that for gamers, DLSS 5 is a simple on-or-off toggle. The granular controls, including model selection, Structure Intensity, Tone Intensity, automatic masking and custom per-pixel masking, are reserved for developers.

There is a partial workaround: Nvidia said developers can surface certain controls in their own settings menus, mirroring how DLSS Super Resolution evolved from a binary switch into the quality presets and percentages common in games today.

Built to be easy to integrate

According to The Verge, ease of integration is one of DLSS 5's core selling points. The AI models can automatically recognize and isolate objects in a scene, distinguishing faces, textiles and foliage, without developers labeling what counts as silverware or furniture. Game engines that already understand their own objects can feed that knowledge in, letting artists isolate props such as glassware, water droplets or foliage and apply custom neural lighting adjustments to just those elements.

Unreal Engine 5 ships with a native plugin, and Nvidia offers SDKs for other engines. Developers can apply DLSS 5 uniformly across a game or vary it by scene, cutscene or gameplay segment. Nvidia also says the models run on every frame, so there is no minimum frame rate requirement for the technology to function.

Publisher lineup no longer confirmed

The Verge also reports unresolved questions about the game lineup. When asked to re-confirm the originally announced titles, including Assassin's Creed Shadows, Hogwarts Legacy, Starfield and Resident Evil Requiem plus twelve others, Nvidia would only say that more games are on the way and that updates will come as partners finalize their integrations. As The Verge reads it, that non-answer hints some companies may have stepped back following the early backlash against DLSS 5.

Why it matters

DLSS 5 pushes AI from an upscaler into a per-frame, per-object rendering decision-maker, and bringing it officially to RTX 40 hardware massively widens the potential installed base instead of confining the technology to the newest cards. At the same time, the locked-down control scheme draws a clear line: Nvidia and developers decide how the neural models shape an image, and players either accept the result or switch it off. Whether the technology spreads now depends less on the hardware roadmap than on whether publishers stay committed, and on that question Nvidia is conspicuously no longer naming names.
