OnePlus 16 launches in China with 185Hz display and 9,000mAh battery

OnePlus has unveiled the OnePlus 16, its first flagship since exiting the US and Europe, pairing a 185Hz OLED screen with a 9,000mAh battery and 200MP camera — but it will only be sold in China.

OnePlus 16 launches in China with 185Hz display and 9,000mAh battery

OnePlus has launched the OnePlus 16 in China, its first flagship phone since the company pulled out of both the US and European markets earlier this year. According to The Verge, the device arrived on October 12 and shapes up as one of the brand's strongest releases in some time, even though most Western buyers will never have the chance to purchase one.

Performance built around a huge battery

As with earlier OnePlus flagships, raw performance is the headline. The Verge reports that the phone runs on a Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 chipset, paired with up to 16GB of RAM and 1TB of storage.

The standout specification is the power cell: a 9,000mAh silicon-carbon battery that The Verge ranks among the largest ever fitted to an Android flagship. It is complemented by 100W wired charging and 50W wireless charging.

A 185Hz OLED display

The OnePlus 16 moves to a 185Hz OLED panel for the first time, according to the report. Beyond enabling 185fps gameplay in supported titles, the screen can run at up to 165Hz across the entire system interface, something The Verge notes is a first for a high-refresh panel of this type.

Cameras receive a serious upgrade

Photography has historically been a weak point for OnePlus, but the 16 makes meaningful progress. The main camera jumps to 200 megapixels, with a larger 1/1.4-inch-type sensor and a faster f/1.4 aperture than the OnePlus 15 — an upgrade The Verge suggests should address the low-light frustrations its reviewers found in that earlier phone.

Two 50-megapixel cameras handle ultrawide and telephoto duties, and the telephoto unit also gains a substantially larger 1/1.95-inch sensor.

Design and pricing

There is a design flourish as well. The silver finish incorporates rear LED lighting shaped into a large numeral 16 alongside a set of coordinates that OnePlus says point somewhere in the galaxy. According to The Verge, the shapes themselves are fixed, but the lights pulse in different rhythms to signal incoming calls, messages, battery status and other notifications.

The OnePlus 16 starts at ¥5,699 — roughly $850 — in China. With OnePlus no longer operating in the US or Europe, The Verge is blunt about wider availability: there is no prospect of the phone launching in either market.

Why it matters

The OnePlus 16 captures a company at a strange inflection point. Its most competitive hardware in years is arriving at precisely the moment its addressable audience has narrowed to China and its remaining markets, turning what would normally be a global flagship launch into a regional one.

The specifications also signal where Android hardware is heading more broadly. A 185Hz panel and a 9,000mAh silicon-carbon battery push past what most phones sold in Western markets currently offer, and the camera overhaul addresses the most persistent criticism of the previous generation.

For OnePlus enthusiasts in the US and Europe, the 16 is effectively a preview of technology they can no longer buy officially — either an object for grey-market imports or a reminder of what the brand left behind when it exited those regions.
