Open-source TikTok Pixel and Events API extension arrives for Adobe Experience Platform Tags

An open-source Adobe Experience Platform Tags extension pairs TikTok's browser pixel with its server-side Events API, using shared event IDs for deduplication and client-side hashing of user data.

Open-source TikTok Pixel and Events API extension arrives for Adobe Experience Platform Tags

A developer has open-sourced a tag-management extension that combines TikTok's browser pixel with the TikTok Events API inside Adobe Experience Platform Tags. In an announcement on dev.to, Bhargav Bhatt says the project is now open to community contributions and sponsorship, and frames it as a response to conversion tracking that has become unreliable under browser privacy restrictions, ad blockers and intelligent tracking prevention.

How the extension works

According to the post, the extension runs two dispatch paths at once. When an Adobe Tags rule fires an event such as AddToCart, the browser executes TikTok's standard ttq.track call while the extension simultaneously prepares a matching payload for TikTok's Events API, the company's Business API endpoint for conversion data. Data elements configured in Adobe Tags supply the event parameters, and a dedicated module injects the pixel snippet onto the page.

The design targets the central problem of combined tracking: duplicate conversions. For every event, the extension generates an RFC 4122 version 4 UUID and attaches the same identifier to both the browser hit and the Events API request. Bhatt writes that this shared event ID is what stops TikTok from counting a single conversion twice when it arrives through both channels.

Privacy handling

User identifiers — email address, phone number and external ID — are hashed with SHA-256 in the browser before anything is transmitted, using the native Web Crypto API (crypto.subtle) rather than an external library. Only the hashed values are forwarded with the Events API payload, an approach the author presents as privacy-first normalization of sensitive data.

SPA support, timeouts and debugging

The extension ships with observers on the History API (pushState, replaceState and popstate), so route changes in single-page applications built with modern JavaScript frameworks are captured without extra configuration. Execution is non-blocking: script loading times out after five seconds and API requests after ten, so a network failure cannot stall the rest of a Tags rule chain. A debug mode adds an on-screen badge and detailed console logging.

Funding goals and roadmap

The project is seeking backing through GitHub Sponsors, Open Collective and Patreon. According to the post, funding would support four roadmap items: submitting the extension for verification on the Adobe Exchange marketplace, building a native server-side version that runs on Adobe's Edge Network via Event Forwarding, expanding the existing Jest test suite with automated browser integration tests, and producing setup guides and video walkthroughs for tracking engineers.

Bhatt also invites users to test the extension in Adobe's reactor-sandbox environment, star the public GitHub repository, and file issues or documentation improvements.

Why it matters

Client-side measurement keeps losing signal as browsers restrict cookies and extensions block tracking scripts, which is why ad platforms now push server-side event forwarding as the fallback. The hard part is not the API call itself but everything around it: shared identifiers for deduplication, hashed user data for compliance, and triggers that understand single-page navigation. This extension packages those pieces for one specific pairing — TikTok and Adobe Experience Platform Tags.

For teams on the Adobe stack, open source also means the PII handling can be audited line by line before a privacy review, something closed vendor extensions rarely allow. The trade-off is maturity: the extension has not yet passed Adobe Exchange verification, and the Edge-native server-side version exists only as a roadmap goal dependent on sponsorship. If those milestones land, a solo developer's integration could grow into a supported option for marketing teams that need TikTok conversions to keep counting.
