OpenAI raises $11 billion at $1.25 trillion valuation, short of the $1.4 trillion it sought

OpenAI closed $11 billion at a $1.25 trillion pre-money valuation, below the $1.4 trillion it reportedly sought, with SoftBank and MGX participating and a second tranche still open.

OpenAI raises $11 billion at $1.25 trillion valuation, short of the $1.4 trillion it sought

OpenAI has closed roughly $11 billion in new funding at a pre-money valuation of $1.25 trillion, according to a 247wallst.com report that reached the Hacker News front page. The cash arrived in the company's accounts by Friday, November 6, and CFO Sarah Friar confirmed the valuation figure in a television interview. OpenAI itself declined to comment on the financing.

A smaller round than first sought

According to 247wallst.com, press reports had OpenAI initially seeking $30 billion or more at a $1.4 trillion valuation, and two investors reportedly put the opening ask as high as $1.5 trillion. Friar disputed the higher number on air, saying it originated with a media report and never came from OpenAI.

Whichever starting point is correct, the round closed both smaller and cheaper than the earliest reported terms, a shift the report links to the recent sell-off in AI stocks. The $11 billion that has landed covers only about 37% of the original $30 billion target. SoftBank and Abu Dhabi's MGX took part.

A follow-on portion could lift the total as high as $20 billion, and a separate report put the remaining tranche at up to another $9 billion. That portion has not closed, and lead investors, terms and use of proceeds were not disclosed.

Friar framed the price as nearly 50% above OpenAI's March round, which raised $122 billion at an $852 billion valuation. 247wallst.com puts the implied step-up at roughly 46.7%, while cautioning that the figure is approximate because her number is pre-money and the March basis is unclear.

Growth claims against a cooler market

The discount landed even as Friar described an accelerating business. She said OpenAI grew 70% quarter over quarter in the third quarter, that its enterprise business doubled, and that revenue splits about evenly between consumer and enterprise customers. She also cited 1.2 billion weekly ChatGPT users and an advertising run rate of $1 billion as of August, while giving no revenue dollar figures.

Rival Anthropic, which plans a Nasdaq listing in mid-November, faces a similar repricing: some investors now value it at about $1.5 trillion, down from roughly $2 trillion in earlier expectations, according to the report.

Microsoft feels it in the accounts

Microsoft closed at $530.61, down 0.99%, for a market value of $3.94 trillion, though the funding news broke around the close and the move had other causes. Gains on the OpenAI stake added $207 million to Microsoft's GAAP net income in the September quarter, versus $3.1 billion in net losses a year earlier. A smaller valuation step-up reduces future accounting gains of that kind, which 247wallst.com notes is minor next to Microsoft's 48% Azure growth.

NVIDIA feels it in the order book

NVIDIA rose 2.78% to $186.64 as chip stocks rallied, but remains down 21.4% over one month. The company has said OpenAI's existing and planned commitments add up to roughly 12 gigawatts of its compute, and management has said frontier labs are growing faster than what their balance sheets and credit profiles can support. A round that fills in stages, 247wallst.com argues, shows that strain directly, which makes NVIDIA more exposed to OpenAI's fundraising pace than Microsoft is.

Why it matters

The gap between what OpenAI reportedly sought and what it secured matters as much as the headline valuation. It shows that even the sector's flagship company cannot fully dictate terms when public AI stocks are under pressure, and it signals that frontier labs' capital requirements now outrun what private markets will supply in a single bite, a dynamic NVIDIA itself has flagged.

The bull case laid out in the report rests on demand: Microsoft says it has more demand than capacity, and NVIDIA has guided to $108.0 billion in third-quarter revenue. The bear case rests on financing: private valuations can fall further, the second tranche may close below full size, and a weak Anthropic debut could pull both labs' valuations down. Two milestones will test the picture: whether OpenAI's round actually reaches $20 billion, and whether NVIDIA meets its guidance when it reports on Tuesday, November 17.
