OpenAI has bought Glass Imaging, a startup that applies artificial intelligence to smartphone photography, in a deal worth more than $300 million, according to a report from The Wall Street Journal. TechCrunch, relaying the report, says OpenAI did not respond to a request for comment, so the transaction has not been officially confirmed by either company.

A startup built by Apple veterans

Glass Imaging was founded in 2019 and is based in Los Altos, California. According to TechCrunch, the company had raised roughly $30 million from investors before the reported deal. Its founders, Ziv Attar and Tom Bishop, are former Apple engineers who TechCrunch says led the team behind Portrait Mode, the iPhone feature that blurs a photo's background to mimic the look of a professional lens.

AI at the moment of capture

What distinguishes Glass Imaging from typical photo software is where its AI operates. Instead of using machine learning to touch up pictures after the fact, the company trains neural networks on the characteristics of individual camera systems, such as the distinct camera modules built into different smartphone models. The payoff, as TechCrunch explains, is images that look better the moment a photo is taken. The broader goal is to let software compensate for the small sensors and lenses a phone's slim body can accommodate, working around limits that physics places on mobile optics.

Part of a broader hardware effort

The reported purchase fits a pattern. TechCrunch notes that OpenAI is rumored to be developing its own hardware, with smartphones, earbuds and AI companion devices all mentioned as possibilities. In 2025, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and designer Jony Ive revealed they had been working together on a device startup called io, in connection with OpenAI's $6.5 billion acquisition of Ive's company.

Buying a camera software team suggests imaging will be central to whatever device OpenAI eventually ships. Cameras are among the hardest parts of a phone to get right, spanning optics, signal processing and machine learning, and a newcomer would otherwise need to build that expertise from scratch.

Why it matters

If the deal closes as reported, it marks one of OpenAI's most concrete moves toward consumer hardware rather than models and software alone. Glass Imaging brings two assets OpenAI currently lacks: engineers with deep computational photography experience from shipping one of the iPhone's best-known features, and technology that improves images at capture time rather than as a post-processing step.

The second asset matters for on-device AI. Enhancing pictures as they are taken, instead of shipping them to the cloud, cuts latency, saves bandwidth and keeps user photos local — all meaningful qualities for a hypothetical AI companion device or earbud with a camera.

The acquisition also signals where competition is heading. Computational photography has long separated flagship phones from Apple and Google, and OpenAI buying that talent suggests it intends to compete on imaging as well as on models.
