OpenAI's GPT-6.1 Terra arrives on Vercel AI Gateway with stronger visual reasoning and coding
Vercel says OpenAI's GPT-6.1 Terra is available now on its AI Gateway, improving on the previous Terra model in visual reasoning, factual accuracy and coding, with a context window above 1M tokens.

OpenAI's GPT-6.1 Terra model is now available through Vercel's AI Gateway, the company announced in a blog post on 26 October 2026. The addition means developers can route the model through Vercel's unified API from day one, alongside the gateway's existing routing, cost-tracking and reliability features.
A fast model for document-heavy work
According to Vercel, GPT-6.1 Terra is built as a fast model for visual reasoning, computer use and writing. It advances the earlier Terra release in three areas: visual reasoning, factual accuracy and coding.
Vercel frames the model as a good fit for high-volume tasks in documents and desktop applications, giving examples such as completing forms, reading technical drawings, or keying invoice information into accounting software. The company also draws a boundary: OpenAI continues to recommend its larger GPT-6 models when coding work gets truly complex, which positions Terra as the speed-and-volume option rather than a full replacement.
Capabilities and API surface
The model takes text and images as input and produces text output, with a context window that Vercel puts at more than 1 million tokens. It supports configurable reasoning effort, structured outputs, tool calling, and both implicit and explicit prompt caching. For latency-sensitive applications, a faster variant is offered under the model name openai/gpt-6.1-terra-fast.
Integration options listed by Vercel include the AI SDK, the OpenAI-compatible Chat Completions API, the Responses API, and coding agents connected to AI Gateway. The standard model identifier is openai/gpt-6.1-terra.
To use the model inside tools such as Codex or Cursor, Vercel says developers should install the latest Vercel CLI, run npx vercel ai-gateway setup, and then select the Terra model within their agent. The model can also be tried directly in Vercel's model playground.
What AI Gateway adds
Vercel describes AI Gateway as a single API for calling models, tracking usage and cost, and configuring retries, failover and performance optimisations, which the company says deliver higher uptime than going to a provider directly. The service also includes built-in custom reporting, Zero Data Retention support, budgets for individual API keys, and routing rules.
On pricing, Vercel says the gateway mirrors provider pricing with no markup and charges no platform fee on inference, including on requests made under a Bring Your Own Key arrangement.
Why it matters
Two things stand out about this launch. The first is immediacy: a major new OpenAI model being reachable through a routing layer like AI Gateway on announcement day shows how much of the developer workflow now runs through gateways and agent tooling rather than direct provider APIs. Teams already standardised on Vercel's stack get the model without adding a new billing relationship or a second integration path.
The second is the model's positioning. With a context window above 1 million tokens, image input and an emphasis on visual reasoning and computer use, GPT-6.1 Terra appears aimed squarely at automating clerical and desktop work, the forms, invoices and technical drawings that pure-text models have handled poorly. That OpenAI still steers the most complex coding jobs to its larger GPT-6 models suggests a deliberate split in the lineup: fast, high-volume multimodal work on one track, deeper reasoning on another. How well Terra holds up in real production document pipelines will be the thing to watch.
