OpenAI will show labeled display ads alongside ChatGPT-generated images

OpenAI is adding visual display ads that appear next to images ChatGPT generates, starting later this month in the U.S., alongside expanded measurement and brand-safety partnerships.

OpenAI extends ChatGPT ads into image results

OpenAI is widening the advertising footprint inside ChatGPT with a new visual display format that places ads next to images the chatbot generates on request, TechCrunch reports. The placement is scheduled to go live later this month and will initially be limited to the United States, where a small test group of advertisers will run creatives promoting products and services.

According to the company, the ads will carry clear labels and are designed so they do not shape the responses ChatGPT itself produces.

Part of a broader advertising push

The display units build on an ads program OpenAI launched earlier this year as a way to underwrite its free and lower-priced subscription plans. That program was extended to India in August, TechCrunch notes.

The new visual format targets advertisers who want richer, image-led storytelling, and OpenAI's longer-term ambition is to give them access to ChatGPT's 1.2 billion weekly users once the placements roll out globally.

The timing also matters: the expansion arrives shortly after Meta released Muse, a free agentic AI app that TechCrunch describes as an increasingly serious rival to leading chatbots such as ChatGPT.

Measurement and brand-safety partnerships

Alongside the new format, OpenAI is building out the measurement and verification stack around its ads business. TechCrunch lists a set of click-attribution partners including AppsFlyer, Triple Whale, Adjust, DV Rockerbox, Northbeam, Branch, Singular, Kochava, Airbridge and Tenjin, plus full-funnel and advanced measurement specialists Fospha, Measured and INCRMNTAL.

The company has also enlisted Haus, Measured and WorkMagic to help advertisers run geo-based ad experiments, and it is piloting brand suitability evaluations with DoubleVerify and Integral Ad Science so advertisers can better judge the environment their campaigns appear in.

User experience trade-offs

TechCrunch points out that weaving ads into generative workflows risks disrupting the user experience, and suggests this may be partly intentional. More prominent advertising could nudge casual users toward paid subscriptions in order to avoid the ads, turning friction into an upsell lever.

Why it matters

Taken together, these moves signal that OpenAI is serious about turning ChatGPT into a genuine ad-supported business for its free and low-cost tiers, rather than treating advertising as a side experiment. For advertisers, access to a user base measured in the billions of weekly interactions inside a conversational, intent-rich product is a significant new inventory pool, provided the brand-safety and measurement questions can be answered convincingly. For users, it marks another step in the commercialization of a product that carried no advertising until this year, and it raises the stakes in the intensifying competition with Meta's Muse and other free AI apps.
